I am about to upgrade a 10.1.5 machine to 10.2 and have information on the machine I would like to save. The question is if I do a Archive and Install, will I lose any files (mp3's, word docs, etc)? Thanks for your help

archive and install will put a new osx folder
on your drive and disable the previous one
but still leave it on your hard drive. it also
transfers your settings.

i originally did an archive and install but
my tibook 667 seemed sluggish and had
some minor problems. the performance
got so bad that i thought i needed a new
sysstem cause osx was just to much for it.
BUT then i did a reformat reinstall and all
was well. you have to backup all data that
you want to save but it was worth it. HOWEVER
i reinstalled norton antivirus and had some
perfomrance problems with windows opening
so i reformated and reinstalled AGAIN and
ditched norton. everything is fine fine fine :)
now. woooooohoooo good luck and take it
easy. one last word. i use to move my apps.
around in the application folder but now
i just leave them be. i made a seperate
application alias folder to organize my
applications (the aliases instead of the
actuall application) . I also made two
partitions, one for OSX and applications
about ten gigs and the other partition is
for personal and project files. this way i
can reformat my osx partition whenever i
need to without it being a hassle...just
incase i experinece a strange problem with
the OS. Or if i need to update.

I did the archive and install, and the checkbox for preserve user settings was grayed out. I didn't worry, but the entire user directory was wiped out. Fortunately I had burned a CD of it and other folders before I did the install.

Naturally you could just copy it to another name (hold down option and drag it).
