I want to get away from using AIM because its horrible for Macs. I really like Adium (tried it earlier this week) but no matter what i set the fonts to in Adium, it sends out some generic font when I send a message. I want people to receive the same font I set Adium to show my messages as having. Any way to force fonts in Adium?? If not, any other programs that will?

That's one of the features of the real AIM client that I *HATED*.

I had a friend who insisted on typing on a dark-blue background with small text (in a cursive font, no less). That might have looked great on his system, but I could barely read it on my monitor.

No matter what you send they can always filter it to be how they want to see it, even in the generic AIM client. You can filter their incoming text to whatever you want as well, but the end-user has ultimate control, not the sender thankfully. I hate the colored backgrounds with silly text, annoys the crap out of me!!!

Personally I'm glad I can set everything to a readable Arial 9font, I can deal with that.

i used adium for a little while , and heres how i feel... it looks really cool, and you can mod it all day long, but it just isnt as easy to use as aim or ichat, so i still use classic aim :)

I agree somewhat but I can't stand AIM for Mac, it hasn't been visually updated since the days of Jaguar. iChat is less functional yes, but aesthetically and responsively more pleasing.

I never got into Adium because it required too much tweaking and didn't seem to look too great without bigger monitor than my 14" iBook display. To each his own though.

Umm, .86 beta? I assume you just mean the .86 release....not specifically a beta version of that .86 release....

Either way, Adium has always worked for me, never had problems sending files or anything like that. Adium has way better support than Trillian had for PC, Trillian was horrible with file transfers and other protocols.

I love adium; the only reason I go near ichat or AIM these days is if I have to send a file. The file transfer issue is well known, and acknowledged by the folks who design adium. You can read what they have to say about it here (http://trac.adiumx.com/wiki/FileTransfer) yeah I wish they'd fix it, but it's so much better than any other option in so many ways that I'm keeping it.

I guess I am just lucky with it "working sometimes" being all of the time in my case. Very fortunate, I've never had it not work unless the client I am attempting to send too doesn't support file transfers....but that isn't Adium's fault now ;)

Not anymore... (I use both). As of now, Trillian is the better IM app.

And, yes, I don't mind that I won't see what font the person I talk to use. It's often some horrible font/colour/background combination :p

The reason lies in the fine print... file "transfer" works only partially. File "sending" works almost perfectly while file "receiving" is pretty spotty, for me it never works.
It seems like with Gaim 2.0 there will be working file "transfers" as well as working audio chat integration with GoogleTalk, etc.
Which leaves video chat pretty much the only reason to use ichat...

I guess come to think of it I don't do that much file receiving, although the times I remember doing it worked well enough I suppose (received the file so what more is there?). I can see how that would be a pain, would be quite annoying to not be able to receive stuff, it would certainly limit the sporadic 'look at this outrageous image i have' stuff, which is fun

How are you setting your font? Have you seen http://trac.adiumx.com/wiki/FontsAndColors ?

after manually opening up some ports in system preferences i can send a file through aim but msn and yahoo refuse to let me send a file through adium. i really want to use it but i really need it to be able to send files easily through all three and of course audio and visual at some point...

Yeah, it is definitely a drawback of Adium, though admittedly one of very few, but I use it together with iChat anyways since I need the video feature, as I am away from good old Germany often, so this doesn't pose that much of a problem. For text messaging Adium is hard to beat if not THE best app out there.

Trying that worked just great for me. I'm very happy with Adium now. If I could make the fonts work in the status menu, I'd be even happier. But it is what it is I guess.

Try Proteus as an at par alternative to Adium.

So I finally got Adium to do everything I wanted exactly right. Its a bit quirky, but much better than AIM. I'm happy chatting for the first time in a while!

I am running Adium 0.86 and can send files through my MSN, Yahoo and Jabber
accounts with no problems whatsoever. In fact, I don't seem to recall when did
It fail to send a file at all.

Having MSN or Yahoo Audio/video will not happen anytime soon. In fact, I think
it will never happen. If you really need Audio/video badly you can kindly
send an email to Microsoft/Yahoo asking them to open their protocols so that
other people can write sofware that can inter-operate with their products.

I use Adium and haven't had many problems with sending files. The only ones I had were to someone who was on a dialup connection, so I think it was probably on the other end and not Adium per se.

For me Adium is pretty much a substitute for MSN messenger, since the Mac version is a steaming pile, as everyone knows. I like it a bit better than Proteus, although I thought it was pretty good too.
