I am extremely inexperienced with Photoshop and always intimidated by the interface.

Currently, I am looking for a way to place a virtual spotlight on someone's face in a black and white photograph.

I was unable to find an easy way to do this. Is there one? If not, how can it be done?

Well, if you don't want the actual light beam, just the effect, maybe you could try selecting your brush, then setting the width to whatever you want, and maybe the color to white with around 20~30% opacity. Not sure if this is what you want, and I hope that you can understand it. If not, just ask. ;)

I'd try this highlights and shadows took and punch up the highlights a bit and the midtones a bit less, but then if iGary saw it he might think I'm nuts (http://forums.macrumors.com/showthread.php?t=166910). ;)

If that looks OK for the area you want, create a new layer and blend the two together with some opacity.
