I have been able to get rid of tha Safari Google bar by hacking it with dev tools as per this (http://forums.macrumors.com/showthread.php?t=151344) thread.

But when I open the FireFox package all that's in there is a file that says en.Iproj, which is I guess equivalent to the Safari english.Iproj, but when I open it up instead of having any .nib in it it just has a single file called InfoPlist.strings

You don't need to hack anything. View->Toolbars->Customize, then drag the Google thingy from the browser window into the dialog box.

Doh. OK thanks for that. A bit counter intuitive I was looking for a command. I looked at the customise toolbars but I guess I expected there to be a google bar in the dialog box.
