Does anyone have any idea how I can boot OS X from a local read-only image? I want the stability of netboot without the network latency.

If the image is mounted on your Desktop and the image is stored on your computer, than no, you cannot do that. When the computer restarts the image is unmounted. Try burning it to a DVD or CD?
