Tiger is buzzing at me!

AH! I just updated from Panther to Tiger. Now, about 25% of the time when ever I place an item on the desktop it makes a LOUD clicky-buzz-feedback sound. Some times it dose it randomly too.

If you mute the Alert Volume (in the Sound section of System Preferences), does this still occur? I'm just trying to work out what exactly the sound is and where it's coming from. :)

No. It almost sounds like it's coming from the hard drive.

Okay, go to Disk Utility in the Utilities folder and ensure that when you select your hard drive, the little blurb at the bottom states that SMART Status is Verified. Maybe you should look into running fsck (http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=106214) too. :)

I think that might be an alert sound. Turn your speakers off and see if it still makes the sound.

My SMART statues is verified. When the volume is muted it still makes the sound.

I just realized it only happens when there's a CD in the in the drive.
I have a super drive. It's been kinda buggy since day 1. It's very picky about what type of media it'll read. It's also one of those drives that spits the CD right out of the computer and bounces it across the desk, unless you catch it.

If fsck looks a bit risky for you at this stage (it's admittedly quite intimidating at first) then go back to Disk Utility and Verify the Disk. Just to be clear, you're Verifying the Disk, not Verifying the Disk Permissions. :)

Does it all come back okay?

I verified disk permissions and everything was fine.
And know it's doing it without a CD in the drive.
It's coming from the top right corner of the iMac. It's a loud pop.

But it dose it without the disk in the drive (despite what I said earlier).
It happens when ever I copy a file to the desktop.

I wonder if it IS the Super Drive, and whenever I copy a file to the desktop it updates everything, witch would include looking in the Super Drive. Just a thought....

Nah, I meant verify the disk, not the permissions. :)

You repaired permissions and it came back fine? I haven't run a permission repair since 10.4.1 without getting quite a few messages. Meh, I doubt this is related to your problem anyway.

Maybe try a PRAM reset (http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=2238). :)

What I met by fine was, nothing out of the ordinary.
What exactly will restarting the PRAM do?

Resetting the PRAM will revert some of the optical drive's settings back to their defaults. :)

That sounded like a speaker pop you recorded. Try resetting the PRAM and tell us what happens....thats a loud pop.

I reset the PRAM, it still pops at me..... But I do notice a few sound effects that weren't there before....:p

Maybe try resetting the PMU (http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=14449) then. If this does nothing, then I'd take it to Apple.

Woah, sorry, no idea why I assumed it was a laptop. Well, resetting the SMU on iMacs can be convoluted depending on the model. What sort of iMac is it?

It's an iMac G5 20 inch. The very first model that came out.

Yeah, it's not worth the effort for resetting original iMac's SMUs. It's quite a convoluted process involving taking the machine apart and pressing a button on the logic board. It can void your warranty too. :o

If it IS the hard drive clicking, then it's about to die. I'm guessing it's the speakers, if nothings else is wrong... maybe the fan? Sorry, I wasn't able to hear the recording, I got 404'd which happens too often with .mac accounts, for some reason.

iMac rev A and B are allowed to be taken apart, hence the user servicable parts. This will not affect your warranty.

True, but as I said, the warranty can be voided easily. Whilst you're allowed to take it apart, you're not covered for anything that may happen whilst inside. Well, at least that's my understanding. :(
