View Full Version : 10.4.5 update... any problems?

I updated, don't have any problems so far, but Safari doesn't seem faster, if anything possibly slower to start up (more bounces than before), and slower to render pages (but maybe that's an illusion).
Report any problems, including with third party software!

Any issues with the Logitech Control Software or the Microsoft AU Daemon? I think they were giving me booting trouble in 10.4.4. It got tired of +90 second boots.
Is it safe to remove the Microsoft AU Daemon? I can update Office 2004 myself using the standalone updaters.

It took a restart before it let me log into my iBook. It wouldn't accept my password for some reason. My iMac has been fine though. :)

Do an Archive and Install of the operating system. Apple makes it pretty hard.

I said I would let you know in your other thread, but it was closed. Anyway, I installed it on the MDD in my sig with no problems sleeping or waking up from sleep whatsoever. Do you have any PCI USB 2.0 cards installed?

It might make you think about waiting before downloading an update before you see whether it's safe or not.

You are right, and even though I've had no problems so far, I told myself that I'll wait a few days or even a month or so before installing any further updates. Especially that 10.4.5 had nothing in it that especially interested me... I don't have Front Row or other concerns this apparently addressed. Makes sense, just to see if any problems creep up. But guess what, my resolve lasted all of 2.5 minutes from the moment I learned there was an update. Go figure :D

As Mr. Mister said, an Archive and Install will do it, but I Erased and installed (my HD was acting up.)

I know what you mean. I've done it and regretted it. I even waited until 10.4.1 was available before installing Tiger and got hurt. Thankfully, having had to be in charge of large corporate computers, I'm usually more cautious, but that seems to be changing. Oops!

yeah only install this update if you have an intel machine. my powerbook has froze numerous times today as well as a few kernel panics where the grey box comes on screen to tell you to restart. i'll have to look into the archive and install option.

No problems installing the update from "software update" for me. Used Onyx afterward, just in case.

Chicken of the VNC no longer appears to work (and yes, I noticed this before experimenting with the latestpics code). I get a beachball and have to force quit.

I just booted it up this morning (first time since I installed the update last night) before going to school; nothing drastic happened, all seems well.

Doh, I'm an idiot. I didn't have the network cabled connected to the Linux machine I was trying to VNC to.

Could not login after performing update restart, but got past that hurdle yesterday. This morning, my PB wouldn't wake up. Did restart & have "BDoD" blue screen after start up is "complete". Will not start up in safe mode. Some times during restart, normal chime sound is replaced with higher pitched "whooooooo" sound & sleep light flashes erratically. Have zapped P-RAM, etc..
Has anyone else experienced such fun after this update. It's a first for me in all the years of using Macs.. :(

When i updated and restarted it would not log in it stayed at this blue color screen so i had to hard restart it then everything went smooth from there.

I find that I have a lot less free RAM since the update. 10.4.4 gave me about 200 MB free with only Finder and Dashboard running, now I have about 130-140 MB free!!??

Ever since I updated to 10.4.5 my DC PMG5 froze TWICE!
Yes, 'FROZE,' as in completely locked up and required a 10-second power button hold to shutdown.
I've had this machine since 10.4.2... No problems until now.
'Been using macs for 6 years. No problems until now.
What gives?
I'm thinking a back up and erase/install, but being that I have 650GB to back up before I do so...I'm NOT looking forward to it.
Anyone with a similar experience?

I have completed the update on my all of my Macs (see sig below) to 10.4.5. So far, no issue I can find while using them. CS2 still works, MX2004 still works, Safari is as fast as it has been, and etc. I always take off the Firewire and USB external HD from my machines before OS updates (However, I sometimes keep the USB hub on with mice/keyboard while update for a few of my machines which are not using BT units).

Actually I do have a problem. I quit Mail but there is still a black arrow underneath. I can click on it and "Mail" appears in the toolbar, but the quit option is gray, not black because Mail is quit I guess. But if I right click Mail in the Dock, I can click Quit but it does nothing. This never happened b4 so it probably is a problem from the update.

My Apple USB keyboard seems to be having a few problems. Occasionally it's not being recognized by the mac, and requires unplugging/plugging in again.
Several people at work have reported some USB issues also. I wonder if it's just co-incidence or something more to it?

I have another issue on BOTH my PM and my PB running 10.4.5. No biggie, but noticable and annoying. Apple Mail take minutes (like 2-5) to get new mail from my .Mac. I'd also like to note that I erased/installed and updated clean, then re-integrated my data on both machines.

I finally took the plunge and updated my Rev. A 20" iMac on 10.3.9 to 10.4.5 and no problems at all (except for the hours I had to spend downloading updates on dial-up.) Launch from start-up is a way quicker and running my most used programs seems speedier too.
I'm nearly ready to back-up. I'll give it a few more hours just in case anything untowards shows up.

I noticed that. I wonder if it's something we'll be able to adjust in a progrm like TinkerTool or Onyx (obviously not right at the moment, but in the future).

Thats because of updated video/openGL drivers, and the continued move towards offloading more & more of the gui tasks to the video card. GPU's are specialized, single-task devices, rendereing & displaying pixels on the screen is there only function, and they can do it so much better than a CPU, which has to contend with literally 1000's of jobs at once.......
it's doubtful if you'll be able to adjust the genie speed, unless TT or Onyx comes up with a way to control the offloading process. You can, however, use some renice commands/utilities to assign a higher system resource priority to the window & UI server processes.....this does help some, but it is not specifically directed at just the genie effect, but rather the overall GUI responsiveness as a whole :)
