It does not have to be on .Mac at all. iWeb will let you publish the whole site to a folder. At that point you can use whatever method you like to get it to your own server. FTP would be the most obvious.

iWeb does not cater for dynamic, server side stuff at all. So no shopping baskets, forums or anything else unless you supply your own server-side software.

ok thanks for your help. I wouldnt need shopping baskets so thats ok, but i would like a type of enquiry form, where customers would type out information ie name address etc then it would be sent to my email. is this possible in iweb or what software do i need for it. thanks again.

You can't do that directly in iWeb. If you want a form that directly mails you then we are back to server-side software that you need to provide. If you are happy for them to click a link and it to open their mail client you can do that via a standard mailto: link. You can provide quite a lot of functionality via mailto: including subject, template body text and so on...

"does .mac allow you to use it as a host to your site and then redirect it to http://www.yourdomain.com name without having the http://www.mac.com/yourdomain address". That is a function of the host of your DOMAIN (like namezero or godaddy etc). All you need to do is set up masked domain forwarding to your dotmac page, and all is well.;)

Hope this Helps

I have outlined how to do this at GoDaddy in this thread:

Quick question: I had to wipe my disk and reinstall osx. Well, iWeb starts out anew. Anyone know how to get it to revert to the old website I created using iWeb or do I have to start from scratch?

do a spotlight search for "domain"

it should be in this folder

HD>Users>your name>Library>Application Support>iWeb

Mine is 50 something megabytes

He wiped his drive - I think.

You should be able to download it from .Mac to your drive and open that up in iWeb.

If it was never uploaded anywhere, you're going to have to redo it.

How, or what, exactly do I download from .Mac? I'm kind of in the same boat as the above poster, only I didn't wipe my HD. I'd simply like to transfer doing the iWeb work from my PowerBook to my Mini.

In that case you can probably use the suggestion from Kyle Nerder above. Otherwise, go to your iDisk (possibly via System Preferences...->.Mac->iDisk->iDisk Syncing On) and find the web folder - I don't use iWeb, so I'm not sure where it places the files there.

When I got that in 1.0, just closing and reopening the app overcame it. :)

Thanks. I ran into that a few times in 1.0 as well, only the error box read "Unable to Publish to .Mac." Restarting iWeb worked.

In this case, the error box reads "Unknown Error." I've tried restarting the app, repairing permissions and restarting the computer, etc. Did the update corrupt my data?

Can you access your iDisk? Can you publish it to a folder? I wonder where this error is coming from...

I can access my iDisk. I can publish it to a folder, which I've done just to save things. In my frustration, I deleted everything off of the iDisk and decided to rebuild the entire website. I've finished remaking the first few pages, and it publishes fine now. Bollocks.

I'm also having problems publishing to my .Mac account using iWeb 1.0.1. In fact, I never had any problems with publishing prior to the update but now it "uploads to .Mac" and then unexpectedly quits before updating the individual pages.

Basically I can't update my website now and so am completely screwed. I've repaired permissions, restarted iWeb and my computer and done everything I've thought of but it still doesn't work. Not sure what to do now.

I've also tried publishing to a folder but it quits when doing this also. Help!

This question has been asked lots. Yes you can. You export the site to a folder and from there make your own arrangements to upload it to your host.

Well I've done some experimenting in iWeb, I came up with this website www.martin_somora.szm.sk The greatest think about iWeb that it took me about one hour with absolutely no knowledge of webdesign. Take a look tell me what You think! It's not in english:rolleyes: but hopefuly sometime it will.....

I published the site to a folder and uploaded it via FTP using Golive, with some minor repairs. Althougt the website doesn't work very good with browser other than Safari!!!!

As far as my experience goes there's no way You can paste a html code into iWeb {hope someone says I'm wrong;) }.

Slowly I'm getting really fed up with the web pages where You can see from the first moment it's iWeb. But I've also seen some that You can@t tell the diffrence. Any opinions on this issue?

So far the answer is no, although maybe it could get added in at a future time.

I just made a site; it took literally 15 minutes so don't judge it too hard yet:
site (http://web.mac.com/dave.buell/iWeb)

I have one I've been working on for a while in GoLive, here (http://www.sonic.net/northbay/francetravels/), and while I think it looks better, it certainly took more work with a steeper learning curve. I forsee in the future doing more with iWeb and less with GoLive, as my time constrains increase.

honestly, who cares about the design of my website where i show some family pics and mountainbike pics? (the pics are crappy anyway.)

it's a site to allow people i know to see pictures i took on a vacation. that's it. any time spent on design is a waste of time.

and that is what iWeb is about. everyone can have a website.

if you want unique design then
1.) don't surf on average joe's iweb sites
and 2.) use something else to create them. if you want to show grandma your vacation pictures use iWeb.

Well, actually you can. Here's (http://www.desert-dragons.com/) one of my iWeb sites. Note the last page 'Contact'. Now, I'll admit that I had to do a little bit of hacking to get this, but it works.

What I did was to add the email form to the html after publishing the site. I keep a master of that page separate from the site so it isn't overwritten when I publish the site again. This makes it possible to create pages like these and simply add them back to the site after publishing. Of course, this isn't for people who don't want to get their hands dirty, so to speak.

But, then again, neither is my latest endeavor. I've been exploring what it takes to make new templates. I've successfully created one new template, but it's hard work. However, the fact that it can be done shows that before too long there will be new templates for sale, and maybe even a template building tool. Whether such a tool will come from Apple or a third party remains to be seen. (Of course, iWeb itself is the ideal template building tool, if only Apple would have implemented it that way...)

Thats really good, does it require a lot of knowledge of html to do that ?

It wasn't too hard. I wrote the html for the form separately and got it to look like what I wanted. Then I created a blank page in iWeb (I used a photo page for this one). Checking the html, I found the code for the photo section and deleted it. I replaced it with the form html. I then had to do a little bit of tweaking and such to get the form to appear exactly where I wanted it to on the page. But, once I did it, I simply save the page and never have to deal with it again.

iWeb can publish to any mounted disk, so if the server you want to publish is mounted then you can publish it in the directory. I have a website host at my .Mac, and regisiter the domain with network solutions to point there, cost like
$10.

http://www.planetresearch.com

this is made with iWeb.

my planetresearch is hosted on a differnet part of my iDisk than iWeb naturally posts so i mount the drive and post to that folder.

if you cannot mount a folder on the server, then creat a folder in your computer then ftp it over.

I ran into this problem too. The way I think I solved it was by first reapplying the update. Try that and see if it words. The next thing I tried was turning automatic iDisk synching off (unmounting the loacl idisk). The thing is that I combined that step with deleting my "Web" folder from my iDisk, which forced iWeb to re-upload all the files. That seemed to do the trick and I can now update my iWeb site.

Please be sure to make backups before trying any of this.

I'll ask my questions while this thread is hot. I had my site, www.aaronapter.com, designed for me a year and a half ago. I haven't updated it because it is all in flash and I know jack about web design. I don't care so much about losing the fancy transitions on my page and I just want something that still looks hip but simple for me to update. Of course I want the same address and not a .mac address. Would someone take a look at my site and tell me if I could create a page with the same type of material using iweb? Thanks.

I'm trying to make a webpage in iWeb. All's going well so far. Small question though, with the reflection effect with some themes it's creating a huge image. The image on my welcome page is a 330kb .png, that's huge for dialup users and people with only 5MB hosting space. Are there anyways to shrink it a bit?

move the image to a jpeg and change the quality to medium should not loose to much detail for the web and it will be much much smaller. I put all my images into jpeg then import them into iWeb, so when iWeb converts them to .png they are so much smaller, my largest image is 128KB, most are around 40-45Kb

Simply put, yes, iWeb can make a site similar to this for you. You will, of course, lose your fancy transitions and such, but it will be much easier for you to use and update. And, as has been mentioned a fair amount, it does NOT require you to have a .mac account.

Can iWeb create a site with more then one photo page without displaying 'Photo' and 'Photo 2' on the top nav bar?

I'd like to have a simple '1 | 2' link, but I can't seem to create the '2' page without having it linked at the top.

You can change the name of a page on the sidebar and you can choose whether to have that page displayed in the navigation bar at the top by un-ticking a box in the Page section of the Inspector. :)

I'm not sure if that's what you're after. :o
