changing icons

Lately i have been switching all the icons that apear on my dock. When i switch an icon i always have to restart the application before it will show the new icon. So my question is how would you go about switching icons with applications you can't quit like dashboard, finder, and trash.

You need a program called "Candybar"

How about restarting your computer? (I don't have any expertise in the area, as I keep the default icons, so there may be simpler ways of doing it, like relaunching Finder or the Dock.)

Change them (with CandyBar (http://www.panic.com/candybar/)), then log out and log in.
