Welcome to the club! :)

When my computer first starts up, I have five things to the left, and six on the right side, for a total of 11 icons.

Right now I have 15.

Perhaps this article (http://www.ambitiouslemon.com/hints.php?id=20) from AmbitiousLemon.com will enlighten the view of using the dock for anyone with "clutter" on their dock.

1. trash can
2. a folder with all my apps...with an icon i change every once and awhile
3. chimera
4. entourage
5. adium
6. finder

i like a clean dock and i love having that folder with all my other apps.

Got what i think is the coolest arrangement i have seen, similar to howard's:

1. finder
2. camino
3. mail
4. iTunes
5 Terminal
6. Sherlock
7. iChat
8. ~/applications, a folder of arranged shortcuts to all my apps, like a folder with all the games, and one with graphics apps, and one with MS apps, and so on; this alleviates that need for a big dock. i can't stand those microscopic docks, lol.
9. Trash

the folder of shortcuts allows me to have a normal, unorganized folder with ALL my apps.

Here's mine.

These icons, like Shadowfax, actually are representative of folders in which I have the alias' of the respective applications. I keep the folder that organizes these, the 'Dock Items' folder, in my User Library.

As I made most of these icons to replace the folder icons (to keep my sanity), it's labeled for the purpose of this discussion.

And yes magnification is active, and "Utilities" is up.

very impressive job on the icons and arrangement. i prefer consolidating them into one icon, but that looks really classy!

the only thing i dislike about this is that it's not apparently thematic in any way. i like my icons to be at least somewhat symbolic of what they stand for, with the exception of my iChat icon, but i guess you get used to it.

You're in High School?!? Good God [I feel old]. You're very well spoken and controlled in your messages, keep it up, very important later in life.

Well, I appreciate the compliment.

I have these and a bunch of others I've created. Most, I create using Electric Image Universe 5 (yeah, expensive hobbies  ) - it is difficult to discern from that screencap.

Shadowfax, et al., you want 'em? Look up my profile and email me. The file I'll send you is about 1.6mb right now - more being added as I go...

I just ask you give me credit, when credit is due if someone asks where you got 'em. :D

I make all of them. I did 'Borrow' the face art for Internet and iLife from Apple though.

Everything else, I modeled and rendered - I actually have an Electric Image Set specifically designed for consistent illumination and renderings for the icons.

My dock, I like have everything available within a click. I go to the Applications folder probably every 3 days or so.

yzedf
Mar 28, 2003, 11:29 AM
Does more apps on the dock mean you are old OS 9 (and earlier) users?

How many auto-hide the dock?

Me, I keep only the many times per day stuff in the dock (email, web, chat) and the rest I access via the click and hold the Applications folder until the lists pops out thing.

Of course, I can't stand people that leave 57 links on the desktop either, or leaving everything in one folder. I crave organization.

To each their own I suppose.

23 including the trash. Most of them are frequently used though some of them such as iMovie and iDVD I just have there for the hell of it.

I have quick access to all my apps and files through my home folder, documents folder, and app folder at the end of the dock.

My dock usually hides on the left side the screen, I rotated it so it would fit better on the forums.

24 full-time icons total

DreaminDirector
Mar 28, 2003, 12:46 PM
I have 51 total.

And it's not that I constantly use each one every day. I just like how everything I need, if aand when I need it, is at the bottom of my screen. I hide the dock too so it's not constantly staring back at me.

For me, it's just easier with all of them there.

Finder,
Text Edit,
iTunes,
folder for browsers and URL Bookmark Pro,
folder for favourite Jaguar apps
folder for favourite utilities
folder for maintenance utilities
Trash

Anyone know where to find a disc shaped calculator to finish off my Applications folder?

I create aliases for the folders using a script that doesnt add "alias" to each app title. Wow! :)

anyways, how do you take a screenshot?

Wes
Mar 28, 2003, 02:16 PM
You can use grab, or if you want to be a real geek, use command-shift-3 to take a full screen shot, or command-shift-4 to take a picture of a selection of the screen.

Kwyjibo
Mar 28, 2003, 02:21 PM
Shift + Apple +4 gives you a little crosshair you drag it over your space it captures it and makes a .pdf on your desktop. Then you open preview and export as jpeg.

edit thanks wes: I think there are oither shift-apple-number combos but i do not have thme on hand.

I'm on a crap PC at work, but running through them in my head, I count 18 on the dock back home, with proably about 8 on the "streamlined" powerbook. Always use auto-hide and magnify, beacuse they are just that cool.

I visited a friend of mine the other day who I hadn't seen in awhile. He bought a powerbook a few months back and I was helping him set up his airport. He was messing with my powerbook and then excalimed, "This is cool! How do you get the icons to get bigger when you select them?" I thought everyone new about that feature!

I keep as few icons as possible on desktop.

After using Apple-shift-4 if you press the space bar it will highlight a given area and will only take a screen shot of the given area highlighted (i.e. the window or icon your cursor is over.)

AIM is one of the most disappointing apps i have tried on a mac. any chat program that makes iChat look good deserves a swift kick in the arse. two, actually. i was impressed that there was an ad remover though. i tried it out, and it still annoyed me to no end. he fxed the buddy list, but the chat boxes are WAY too bulky after using iChat, which is clean. it's like they forgot that macs put the menubar up top. that program is so clearly (poorly) ported from windows that it makes me cringe. lol, not to be inflammatory, but it still got to me, even with the ad remover. and you know, the chat windows in windows look fine. i just don't understand why they so stupidly put the icon up at the top and not inline with the other controls. phaugh!

if you right click on entourage and open the package contents, you can usually find the base icon and replace it with a new icon by saving that new icon as a .icns file and naming it the same thing as the original, which you can rename as <whatever it is called>2.icns. if you want to go through the trouble.

i like the consistency of the color, though i think you should go in and take some of the pixelation off the duck and adjust the colors so his eye whites are white and the blue is more consistent; it doesn't look as clean as the rest of the icons.

in my experience m$ apps are the weirdest to put new icons onto if its even possible. Sometimes i have to try a bunch of times and login/logout for them to work right .

I think it maybe also jpeg compression. I'll mess with it a little.

yes, it's the jpeg compression, that's exactly what it is. you can probably smooth it out pretty easily with photoshop's blur brush or something. but mostly i think you need to make the eyes white ;)

Well, I'm just fond of AIM because it allows me to do groups (Hello iChat, are you listening?), IM image transfer, file transfer, no banners (thanks to me! :P ) and buddy icons. That's all I want in a client, and so far, only the official AIM client offers these features. I turn off all the crap I don't need, like logging and news/stock tickers.

For me, AIM is fast, stable, and does what I want.

it's a shame about the groups thing, to be sure. however, iChat has astronomically superior support for buddy icons. and i frequently use it to send images to buddies both as files and via direct connection. it's as easy as drag-and-drop, lol, with the exception of firewall nasties, which is just as much of an AIM problem. iChat's main voids for me are decent away messaging (hint: how about auto-response?) and profile making (you can't do it, period)/viewing (where there is no scroll and you can't resize the box, plus half the links in profiles won't work). sorry for being OT guys.

i think many mac users simply take a great deal of pride in how their setup looks. i know i do. i spent hours and hours looking around for the coolest icons, even had to edit some to get my system to look like it does now; but this isn't the limit of it. i scrutinize my background folder and edit them all on top of choosing them very pickily. This is one reason i love OS X: it has an interface i can feel proud of!

put in the file because i never did earlier, methinks.
