it has nothing to do with the osx. all you have to do is config your windows box to accept web based remote control.
but if your computer at work is behind some gateway/firewall/router... you have to ask the admin to forward the port to your computer
Your systems guys must first enable remote access and set-up the proper configuration, etc. The most common way of doing this is through Terminal Server, by 3rd party VPN, or Citrix Metaframe. There is an incredible amount of variation on how your work set-up may be configured for you to connect. It would be common practice for them to provide you with whatever set-up you need to do locally. Then, you can use any of the MS virtual options, or VPN client SW, to create a TS client. It should be easy to achieve this. Our company has 40-50 users who ONLY connect remotely, and several use macs.

I use Timbuktu to remotely control my file server--easy setup and fast.

if FF/Safari don't accept that activeX, then maybe running Windows XP under Parallels and install it?

then you could use Remote Desktop Connection. it's in the MS Office 2004 package. i use it to remote control my Windows server tower at my home. it's not as fast as doing the same thing from my Windows laptop.
so, im not sure about the speed if you do it from your home to your office.

RDC does the job just fine, but I must warn you, if I was running IT at your office there is no way in hell I would open that port for you. A solution such as GoToMyPC might be better suited, as I believe it doesn't require you to open any ports.
