I have a new HD that I want to use on a G4. Before I run out and buy the latest OS X pack I wanted to know if it was possible to install the retail version on an empty unpartitioned drive. I don't have a copy of the early OS versions.
Any feedback would be appreciated.

You mean you want to install Mac OS X on a new disk? Sure, you can. But you'll have to create a HFS+ partition on it first. (you can do that with the OS X install CD).
Or do I not entirely understand your question...?

Sounds like the right answer
I was under the impression that the retail version of OS X was for upgrades only. Since I don't have a version of OS 9.x I wanted to make sure I could install it.
Thanx!

yup, you should be able to do so. We loaded a new hd in our imac and it is working fine with that disc.

Nope... the retail ($129 or so) version is a full install. So, you should be able to install it on a completely empty drive/machine.
