Weird MS Word "bug"

Has anyone out there come across this bizarre little "bug":

A friend of mine is running Office X. When in word, whenever she tries to type the word "American", the software 'unexpectedly quits' upon typing the "r". No, this really isn't a joke; I saw it happen!!! All other words type just fine...

Anyone know what the deal is?!!!

i think word itself is a bug. however, this problem does sound odd. the only thing i could suggest would be disabling live spelling and grammar checking, as well as all of the other address/name/url mojo word tries to create while your typing. it would seem some process that's monitoring what is being typed (grammar/spelling) is freaking out under particular circumstances. you could also create a richtext document in textedit that includes the word "American", import it, spell-check it, and see what happens. try words that have the same two or three letters as well: amorous, America, amorphous, amity...

or maybe ms has no pride in the country;)
