Changing icons

Hey, kind of a noobish question, but how do I change the icon of a filetype to another icon?

I get how to individually change a file's icon, but how do you just change what the default icon is? I ask this because I recently uninstalled Word in favor of NeoOffice, but now all the .doc files have the generic file icon.

You can fiddle around with some files buried away in your hard drive, but a much easier and safer solution is to use an app like CandyBar. (http://panic.com/candybar/)
