How come we have heard almost nothing about this OS update? It's going to be huge because when Apple updates its OS it does it right. But haven't heard anything about new features and such. How is Apple keeping a hold on this?

This is the gaming forum...I don't think a thread like this belongs here.
With regards to Panther, I don't know why we haven't heard any details (apart from "Piles") seeing as the WWDC is so close.

Maybe some speed, I'd like to see that, maybe quart extreme will amount to something?
OpenGL needs to be revamped also.

There seems to be lots of articles about Panther around the Mac community but it's all hypothetical and educated guesses from what I've seen. I think they're just keeping it a close secret at the moment. Since it's not even being beta tested yet by developers there haven't been any leaks. Apple is supposed to give us a preview of it at the WWDC. Once they do that then they are supposed to start the seeding process with the developers. Once THAT has happened expect all sorts of leaked photos and information.

To Maradong:
Solution: just create one folder on your desktop called 'Mess', and put all your mess in there!

The word in the rumor community is pretty solid that piles will not be included at least in 10.3.

Those 'solid' rumors that Piles is not to be included have only come from two sites of questionable accuracy, LoopRumors and MacOSRumors.

I've read it at other non rumor sites too but it could just be that they were repeating info from those two sites.

I do belive we'll see them. There have been piles in NextStep, although not on the desktop but in the finder if I remember correctly, but I found them quite usefull. There has halso been a quick drag and drop panel on the finder - just where you can now see the app and fav icons - that was very short term usable.
I found it really helpful, and didn't understand it's missing in OSX, since so many things have been adopted from Next.

Apple's more closed than the CIA, and we're more likely to find out that aliens killed JFK before Jobs lets out any info pre-date.
Anyways, my desktop is null and void (meaning empty). I do have it set as my download folder so temp files appear on it everyso often. And sometimes quick photoshop/illustator work finds its way there.

Yes, I like to keep my desktop clean from anyting that can be stored somewhere.
I only put stuff on it I am currently working on.
Panther's going to be huge, that's all we really know. We can reasonably expect a significant speed increase, since Apple's had plenty of time to work on it.
MacOSrumors allege they've had a private showing of Panther and confirm speed increases, but no Piles. Many people doubt their cred though.
