When is OS 10.2 coming out? [Archive]

I bet some people are hoping for a Mar 24th release (which would be *awesome*). But I've got my money on it being a little farther off than that.

Two months away maybe? Three? Thats my (uneducated) guess.

i would much rather wait until july for the update if they could speed things up a lot, add usb printer sharing, build in some more unix utils (in an aqua interface), add other os 9 abilities, and other cool new features

10.1 is good enough for me as it is (for awhile at least)

I wouldnt' expect even a hint of it before MWNY -- look at the shape of the 10.1.3 update.... There is a lot left to iron out in the minor updates.

but maybe late April at the soonest, to hedge my bet.

When is any software of any usefullness coming out for OS X??????

Why are u asking for an update... what's wrong what with you've got?

Do you buy a computer for it's OS, or for the programs it runs?

Remember Atari... Amiga...

If Apple survives this operating system, then they'll have something to crow about!

I'm confused.. are you REALLY saying that "what software [a computer] runs" has nothing to do with the OS? I'm gonna credit you with having more brains than a toad, and assume that is NOT what you're saying.. So, YES, the OS is vital to getting more software for the platform. We have waited a year for Retrospect because the OS was not mature and complete. How many other developers have been waiting, too, for support and not being as vocal about it?

Yes, I think more than half of the people who use Macs do INDEED buy their computer for it's OS. We certainly don't buy them because they are cheap, or have scores of aisles of software at every mass-marketer we come across.

And using the word "survives" "Apple" and "if" in a message is grade-A flamebait. So much so that I am vaguely embarrassed at having replied.

I believe something is going to happen with OSX. Mr Jobs has gone on about the "clock" so much I dont believe he will miss out the 12hour chime!!! Maybe another smaller update?

Photoshop, InDesign, Illustrator, Final Cut Pro, Maya, Lightwave, Office, iTunes, Mathematica, iDVD, iPhoto, Bryce, BBEdit, DeBelizer, Flash MX (and soon Dreamweaver MX and Fireworks MX), After Effects and about 2500 more apps (including many new ports of high-end UNIX software). OS X will bring more apps over to the Mac platform than any other Mac OS before it....

As for 10.2, I think we'll have to wait until the summer...

10.1.3 apparently has drivers for my external CD-r. 10.1.2 doesn't.

Photoshop 7.0 any day now will start me towards Illustrator 10, etc... Gee there are programs for OS X I use now too , as well as others any day now I want to use....

I didn't consider their woes directly OS related. They almost had a hold on Desktop Video, or Midi niches, if they only were good for anything else.

It would be nice if we weren't paying to be beta testers, but look at windoze....

Yeah, seriously. All I need is Photoshop (I don't care to try to rip off a beta), and I won't have to start Classic for anything, ever. And I don't understand this whole "paying to beta test OS X" thing. 10.0 had some problems, but was generally stable, and I almost never have a problem with 10.1. In general, I'm still convinced that OS X is the best OS ever released into the consumer space, and the fact that they've built a consumer OS on a UNIX core is nothing short of amazing.

I wouldn't expect to see 10.2 on the 24th, though. 10.1.3 still has that new update smell. I'm not sure why they would have bothered with the 10.1.3 update if they were so close to 10.2. I could be wrong, but I'll be surprised if that happens.

i dont think 10.2 will be coming out for a while.

I had the latest beta (6b11) about a monnth ago and it really messed up my powerbook. i mean, i knew what i was doin, but it was real laggy. Funny enough, whenever I tried to run MS Word, it would crash after a few minutes - mayb that was on purpose :D. But other problems included that it wasnt able to mount DMG files properly - they were invisible on the desktop... oh yea, but one weird thing... after installing the qt 5 icon reverted to its old OS 9 state in the dock... but probably nothing to be interested about.

Sorry to be so anti-optimistic - it was a month ago tho, hehe

I seriously doubt you'll see anything touted as 10.2 until MWNY. Look how crappy and buggy the last update was.

Also, you will probably not see 10.2 until the MPEGLA Quicktime 6 stuff is solved.

There are plenty of other aspects of the OS for WWDC to address in the meantime.

Yes, I would expect to see Jaguar (OS 10.2) to become available on the market well after MPEGLA finally establishes modist licenses for MPEG technology.

Besides, the current OS X 10.1.3 still needs some minor changes before we see 10.2. Anything such as speed or OS changes or additions are not minor enough to be appropriated into a 10.1.x update. Besides, those improvements would probably consist of codes that are integrated into a rather large, compact archive. And for those who lack the ability of high-speed downloads, the file will take way too long to download.

i dont think apple would tell adc about release dates considering that just about anyone can become a member for money....

Okay how about...

do you consider it in the realm of possibility that some developers might be seeded with betas of an OS release? That isn't exactly a release date, but by looking at builds, and knowing of bugs, they might be able to make an educated guess as to the soonest possible release, even if its a naughty no no for them to breathe such through their NDAs.

yeah, like wry cooter said, they probably have a pretty good idea of when it will be released. this person who i talked to also has seeds of itunes 3, with full mpeg-4 audio support. he also was given releases of qt 6, etc... i suppose he could be wrong about the release date, but i would say that if anyone's right, a member of the adc would be.

Im not against what cooter said... i meant that apple wouldnt actually tell adc members dates of releases, but yea, what you said is very true about how easy it is to predict...
