So I've had my MacBook for about 9 months now, and it's been very reliable, as far as crashing goes.

In fact, I can't recall a single time its had a kernel panic.

Last night, I finally got around to upgrading it from 10.4.8 to 10.4.9 (and also installed the iTunes and iPhoto updates) and ever since, it's done nothing but freeze.

I've gotten no fewer than 5 kernel panics in the hour or so I've had it on.

These are the kernel panics where the screen dims and I get a multi-language box in the center.

It happens even if the only application I have open is Safari. And it usually occures when all I'm doing is dragging my mouse - not loading anything, not even clicking!

It seems to happen even 15 minutes or so... it's driving me nuts!

Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated. I read some stuff about 10.4.9 and iTunes causing kernel panics, but as I said, I'm not running iTunes at all.

Have you repaired permissions?

Try re-installing the combo update from here (http://www.apple.com/support/downloads/macosx1049comboupdateintel.html).

Yes, I repaired permissions before and after the update.

I'll try the combo update... thanks...

I booted off another volume and ran Disk Utlity.

It flagged two "Illegal Name" entries in the catalog.

After it repaired them, things seem to be going smoothly (knock on wood!).

Anyone have any idea what an Illegal Name could be, why it would have popped up during a 10.4.9 update (I'm assuming they weren't there before, or else I'd have kernel panic'd under 10.4.8) and if it's the sort of thing that could have been causing the problems I described?

I have been running 10.4.9 for about a week on a Macbook Pro, and I have seen no such crash. Seems like a very solid update to me.
