Apple Mail Trash icon missing

The trash icon on the left side of the Mail window (under inbox, drafts, etc) disappeared a week ago. I have tried all the pref combos under mail pref>accounts>mailbox behaviour>trash

That's probably because you have no trash. Not much point in having a trash folder if you have no trash, right?

Delete a message (not one you want to keep, in case your Mail.app really is borked), and it SHOULD show up again.

in mail application, click on: mailbox> go to> trash. that should resolve your issue.
