One Panther point not touched on...speed

I notice speed has not been mentioned. Jaguar is good, but could do with responding a bit faster at times.

Can we expect Panther to run faster on our current macs, without having to run out and buy G5's. I have a 1Ghz 17" iMac (768 RAM), which has been known to slow down at times.

i have a friend using apanther beta on a 400G3, and he says it's running a little slow at times, but he thinks that the final release will be a lot better.

overall, the system is the same speed as jaguar. one thing people WILL notice is that the menus are much more responsive, creating the 'snappiness' that many people crave. remember panther is really early, and it will most likely just get faster.

things that are definitely faster tho include preview.app, textedit, activity monitor, and just about any app that uses a multiple tab interface.

optimized code causes more bugs. by throttling the code at this stage in development (alpha) they can keep bugs to a minimum.

remember there are 3 different generations of processors to support. features first, optimizations second.

jaguar got faster during the later stages of development...i wouldn't think panther would be n e different.

Indeed. On my G4 (dual 867), folders and files open at almost comically fast speeds, I find. Expose sends windows flying off the screen in less than a blink of the eye. Apps also launch a lot faster (half a bounce off the Dock for Safari, for example). Over all, this gives Panther a high 'Gee whiz' factor.

When it comes to running those quickly launched apps, though, I haven't noticed much of a difference (but Preview is slicker and faster).

Well, I would have to contribute.

I am using a 400Mhz iMac and Panther is ZIPPY!!! (btw I lOVE the new finder)

Since it's installed on my external HD, I now have it hooked up to a 1Ghz eMac... and let me tell you.... AWESOME. It's amazing, once I "borrow" my stick of 512 ram from my iMac and put it in my g/f eMac, i'm debating wheter or not to wait for the G5. The speed is incredible all around.

I'm a very happy mac geek! :D

The new finder is much faster, but the old things like system preferences seems a bit slow because of the new fade effect, but as you have noted, optimisation has not been properly done yet.

I'll have to say Panther IS faster in the Finder.
Connecting to Servers is quicker than Jaguar, and as mentioned above so are the pull-down menus. The new (forgive this comparison) 'explorer'-like Finder window is easier and quicker to use.
Moving windows around and resizing is also alot quicker. Maybe Quartz Extreme is better, I don't know.
I'm testing on a Dual 1.25 Ghz G4 w/ 1 GB RAM.

CAN'T WAIT TILL THE FINAL RELEASE.

Well, it's not going to be faster on my beige G3...

IT'S NOT GONNA RUN AT ALL!!!

I whined about losing SCSI.
I whined about losing my AV Card.
I whined about my video card not being supported.

I'm tired of whining. ;)
Time upgrade my machine!

When switching from one section to another in System Preferences, the section becomes slightly transparent and fades into the new section as it opens.

In other words, the look is generally the same, except for a few moments you can see both the outgoing preference pane and the incoming preference pane at the same time.

Considering the look of the new Aqua UI elements, Apple has been listening to its customers complaining about "snappiness" of the GUI and has toned Aqua way down to the point of almost looking like a two-colored rounded Windows GUI, only prettier.

I'm really happy with the speed in Panther. My QS 733 seems much more snappier when it comes to menus, window dragging, application launching, Preview and even Safari. I haven't tested any non-Apple applications yet, but I'll say that almost everything in Panther is notably faster. And it's remarkably stable to be in such an early development stage.
