I am pretty sure I got a virus on my mac. I was using my computer this morning and out of nowhere a man and a woman moaning start. I immeadiately sprung up and smashed the power button on my z-5500s. I closed every application and turned the speakers back on. 5 minutes later I went to take a leak. I could hear my computer doing it again. Again I ran back to my computer to turn the speakers off. Has anyone ever heard of this happening? Im running norton right now.

When you're browsing porn sites, mute your speakers.

Very funny, Safari was open, and had engadget up the first time. The second time no websites were open.

Were you browsing porn and quickly clicked hide and now you have just forgotten about it?

Accept any odd files lately? Have a mate or a brother who might be having a little joke on you?

Can you take a screenshot of your activity monitor and all processes?

I wasn't browsing porn. And no odd files. I just downloaded an AC3 codec yesterday morning, but no problems till now.

I have heard of this before. I seem to recall that there was an anticle on April Fools pranks for Macs that showed how you can do this very thing, driving you mark crazy my making his Mac moan, shriek, whatever, with various sound files. Don't remember how it was done but I suspect somebody might be playing a trick on you.

Are you sure no one has remote desktop access to your mac? My sisters boyfriend always used that to play tricks on his little brother.

No one has remote access and no one in my family knows how to even use macs or pc's for more than just word processing and e-mails.

Be careful about the V-word. It sounds like someone set this up. Who else has been using your mac lately. These sort of things have to be done physically. I have seen a youtube clip of someone doing this at a library. Try going to System preferences and setting your sounds to default.

I am pretty sure I got a virus on my mac. ...No, you do not. What you most likely have is a pop-under that sent you to a pornsite without your knowledge. Well, if you say that you did not know, then I will believe you. Really, I believe you.

The problem is that Safari's pop-up/pop-under blockers work great, but the people who create pop-up/pop-unders are not tucking tail. They are developing techniques to circumvent the blockers.

Perhaps something is set to launch when you log in. Use the shift key method (http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=106756) to log in without activating any Login Items. This (http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?path=Mac/10.4/en/mh164.html) describes where you see and set Login Items.

Great post.... I fell off my chair laughing at that one. Still I do hope the OP gets to the bottom of this (sorry for the pun again)

The use of the phrase "immediately sprung" by the OP is prescient. And precious. :)

Ahhh, how wonderful is password protected screensaver. ;)

Yeah, except the second time it happened, all applications were closed. Also, everyone has been out of town in my house for the past few days. Once again they are completely computer illiterate.

It might be a vulnerability of a program that you have running rather than a virus perhaps? Next time it happens, try seeing what processes you have active. That might point you in the right direction. See if you see anything that is active but shouldn't be active and try looking for any other strange processes that you don't recognize.

Thanks, I've been keeping my eye on this, but really don't know what should and shouldnt be running. I'm assuming it will be under my name and not system?

How do you know? Not all applications have windows on the screen. What processes were open?

Look at Activity Monitor and select All Processes. How many of these are Applications that are visibly 'open' on your machine?

Also, everyone has been out of town in my house for the past few days. Once again they are completely computer illiterate.

Which has to do with -- what exactly? Consider the possibilities that you are wrong on at least one of your assumptions
- that you know everybody who has had physical access to the machine
- that they are all incapable of loading a prank application
- that they had to load it between the first and second event - it may be a prank that is designed to come up randomly / intermittantly, and was installed days, weeks or months ago.

Uh.. have you restarted?

If not, do so.

If you have, the sounds came back?

create another user account and run macjanitor

create another user account and run macjanitor

And how exactly would that help? Running routine maintenance scripts (which Macjanitor does) isn't going to stop whatever is making the sounds. Just check your activity monitor for anything that doesn't belong.

I remember seeing some mac prank programs around a few weeks ago, i think one may have been this. It dosent run in the dock, but check activity moniter for anything you think is suspicious. Ill try and find the prank programs.

I would make the same assumption about the process being under your name and not the system. Just try looking at each process name. If you see something suspicious, then try and google it and you should get an explanation of what program is supposed to be associated with that process. Do you see any processes that are active but you believe the associated program is closed? I highly doubt that a system process would be the cause of this sound. If so, I would imagine that we would have heard more about it. But that's again assuming that someone hasn't installed something strange that would cause this behavior.

are there horny garden gnomes living in you mac? When the winter comes around here they set up a home in my G5. Boy some strange noises some out of my mac. Incidentally enough at the same time I'm looking at porn, they must like it.

You do not have a virus.
Im running norton right now.
Well, that will cure the problem... by the time Norton gets through destroying the directory structure of your hard drive your computer won't even boot, much less make sounds! Seriously, you are not running Disk Doctor are you?

Haha, another sucker's born everyday when it comes to Macs and Norton anti-virus software.

I just wanted to post in this thread because its such a novelty. Seriously dude, restart the computer and whatever was causing the moaning (some website I assume) will be gone.

We don't need to hear any stories about how your (or any other member's) kids were conceived. Let our imaginations (and the pictures/videos on the web) do that work for us.:D

I wouldn't worry too much about the moaning. That's pretty common. When you get abnormal discharges (http://forums.macrumors.com/showpost.php?p=3676958&postcount=3), that's when you need to start worrying.
