I was wondering what you all thought was best free mac game out there? Clearly this is totally subjective so feel free to list a few in different categories of games.

I'm sure Freespace 2 would be here somewhere, but never played it.

A good commercial game that someone that bought it and doesn't like it anymore and gives it to you. :D

If you like strategy games then you can't go wrong with...
Freeciv (http://freeciv.wikia.com/wiki/Main_Page)
Battle For Wesnoth (http://www.wesnoth.org)
Freeciv is a Civilization clone that plays a lot like Civ2. BfW is a fantasy game that reminds me of Fire Emblem if you happened to have played it on the Game Boy Advance or GameCube -- turn-based tactical unit combat.

Boom. (http://www.versiontracker.com/dyn/moreinfo/macosx/719) It's a cross between Bomberman and Doom.

And you can download it, so you can play it without internet access.

I'm partial to FreeCol (http://www.freecol.org), though I am a developer so I'm biased.
It is a great strategy game about colonizing the new world and then fighting for independence, with a style quite similar to the Civilization games (the original was designed by the same person).
The Mac version has a couple of interface bugs, but is still completely usable.
It has a bit of a learning curve, especially if you never played the original Colonization (like me). But once you get the hang of it, its a great game!

Cube 2 Saerbraten (http://sauerbraten.org/) is a Quake style game that is developed for Windows, OS X, and Linux. Its single player is not too great... but the mulitplayer is pretty good. Alot like Quake 3 online play :)
Xmoto (http://xmoto.tuxfamily.org/) is a fun 2d motorcycle game.
VDrift (http://vdrift.net/) is a decent racing sim for free.
FlightGear (http://www.flightgear.org/) is a Great flight Simulator.

Why is someone with a low-mileage '03 Beemer for sale for $37k looking for free games? ;)
...thought I'd add Escape Velocity: Nova to this list. It's free for 30 days, which in my experience is all you'll need to extract the value out of it - looks great starting off (broad universe, missions, tech tree) but is surprisingly shallow once you finish a campaign or two. Play it hard for 30 days, enjoy it, and you probably won't want/need to buy more at the end of it.

I'm assuming you intentionally spelled that with an "e" to show that Marathon is definitely full of awe. Wonder, too. So Marathon is loaded with awe and wonder- just ask QuarterSwede!

I mean other than the fact that it is one of the best basic original games that I think anyone who has ever played a video game has played at least once, Pac Man is so fun. I have been playing Pac The Man (http://www.mcsebi.com/ptmx.php) recently and like it a lot, but was wondering if there were any better versions out there, obviously also free?
I was about to say XMoto, but I think my mind is about to be changed to Boom. that looks genius!

One of the best games I've ever played, free or commercial.
Fantastic and memorable characters, possibly a little too linear, great music (it's on my iPod, the Outer Wall theme is just beautiful).

Think I saw this on a thread here at MR, but not this one...or maybe found it myself -
A group is working on an open-source, multi-platform port of Origin's much-reputed Privateer. At least as stated in some places, resource requirements are high, though. http://macgamefiles.com/detail.php?item=19621

Good question. I couldn't figure it out either. After trying nearly every key on the stinkin keyboard, it seems like 'z' is the one that moves you forward through the menus and intro, at least. :p:mad:

Easily one of the best online FPS games made, especially considering the cost :p
In my opinion, better than many currency costing games as, as well.
