I plan to buy a new iMac when Panther becomes available.

Is it possible to install the panther version delivered with the iMac on my iBook? Is the panther cd bound to the hardware? Is there some kind of activation procedure like WinXP? (I am aware, that this is not allowed under license terms)

Well if its not allowed under the licence, don't do it :D I know you can with jaguar, and there is no activation, not even a CD Key. I would imagine its the same with panther.

Of course, I won´t do that. Just wanted to know if it is possible.

Office v.X e.g. checks checks for other instances with same cd key on the network. Therefore I was suspicious if OSX has such limitations.

They do sell a Jaguar Family Pack. 5 Licenses for $199. You could get that and be legal for up to 5 computers assuming Panther has the same Family Pack available.

Duff-Man says.....Yes, the "family pack" is a pretty good deal. Just be sure to read the fine print as to what those 5 computers may be....it does not mean that you can install on any 5 computers - they must be "in the same household" (or words to that effect)....oh yeah!
