Double clicking (glitch? Error?) Major problem nevertheless

It seems too weird to be true...

When I click once on a peice of text, it hi lights, when I click on my buddy list instead of just clicking on it, it opens a IM message...

Therefor it seems by clicking once on something it does the action twice, this was extremly annoying when trying to close 1 safari tab, There was no way in hell I could!

I'm assuming that you're not using the Apple Pro Mouse, cause sometimes there's a problem with the driver of third party mice. I can't solve the double click problem at the moment, but as for safari, to close a specific tab, select the tab and press command-w, the command to close a window will close just one tab, not the whole thing.

ok, just a little story to cheer you up: today, at work, I suddenly couldn't move any icons around. I could select them, I could open menus, I could move windows but icons where stuck...I had to reboot my machine. But it was a Dell running Win2K, so I guess I should know better...

Yeah I'll use that, but that wasn't the point it was just an example...

And I have been using this mouse forever, I don't understand how now the driver would not work...

Is it possible that your double-click timing preference for the mouse has gotten hosed? Just a thought. If your double-click time is *very* short, I could see this happening. Purhaps just delete you mouse preference file and set your preferences fresh.

If you have rebooted and that hasn't cleared the problem, then this [probably] doesnt apply to you but...

Try briefly tapping all of the command keys (Command, option, control, shift, etc) on both sides of the keyboard. When I have problems with mouse clicks (eg clicking links spawns new tabs in safari) it is usually because one of them gets "stuck" (not physically, but insofar as the computer is concerned), and tapping them seems to "unstick" them. If this doesn't help, sorry, no other suggestions...try rebooting?

Have you tried repairing your disk permissions or plugging and unplugging your mouse several times which seems to force it to reload the driver.

could be as simple as the clicker relay on your mouse has gone bad, and the mouse is just faulty for it. Do you know anyone near you with another mouse you can try to see if it's the mouse or the machine? maybe a neighbor or a friend?

its not a file. Open System Preferences and open the Mouse Preferences. it sounds like your settings may have gone weird. are you on a portable or a desktop with an actual mouse because you can set the trackpad to do a variety of different functions.

I remember i was working on the desktop and when i clicked the left button it opened a contextual menu and did the same things as the right click does. It did take some time before I figured that an item was laying on top of the control-key ;)
