View Full Version : Do you prefer the look of Tiger, or Leopard?

I myself prefer Tiger to how leopard is shaping up, more specifically the desktop. I think the menubar and dock don't look as refined as they do in Tiger, and the folder icons look strange and un-mac-like.
screenshots of the latest leopard build can be found here. (http://www.thinksecret.com/archives/leopard9a527/)

Leopard strikes me as much more unified, and I like that (and thats a good thing because it is!). Tiger was good, but it incorporated much of the same look as the previous Mac OS's. It is about time, in my opinion, that Mac OS X looked the same all over.
I am a fan of the new iTunes look, so there for a fan of the Leopard look.

overall: Leopard.
but there are some elements that i know will take some time adjusting to, such as the dock.

I use UNO to get rid of brushed metal and the Agua system icon set, and so those aren't a problem anyway. I like Leopard's bigger shadows on the prominent apps.
As a Quicksilver user and keyboard-shortcut-fanatic, my dock and menubar are on autohide. The dock is small on the left with only the Finder and Trash, I hope it won't be weird...

1. there is no choice for users
2. its hard to make judgement right now, w/o any real world experience.
3. apple defines what "mac-like" is, eventually. and I actually have good confidence :) in apple's design

The dock looks like overkill on the design, but I'm sure I will grow to like it.

Not OS included, sure, but there is UNO and Shapeshifter, as well as countless other OS tweaks. I hope there will be an 'old dock and menubar' option in UNO's Leopard version, for the haters (which may include me) :)

Leopard by far. The only thing I don't like in the latest seed is the default desktop picture. I actually liked the grass better.

My guess is, if you don't like the setup of Leopard, I'm sure there will be a Tiger "classic" setup under System Preferences or something. That and a new Shapeshifter will come out someday.

they've never done that before so i doubt such a thing will be there. you can surely toggle the transparency of the menubar, but they dont like having different skins.

Personally I like Leopard better but that is probably just because I like a change every now and again and I'm getting bored of the Tiger UI :).

Leopard.
I think the Dock looks neat, I know alot of people dont like it.
I like the new "traffic lights" too. Much more shiny.
I like the unified "grey" and rid of the brushed metal.

Leopards, although I hate the sidebar arrowed menu (the left bit) in finder and iTunes, seriously, it looks horrid

Tigers are the ones with the stripes right? Those are the ones I like; I mean after Lions that is.

OS X Tiger has way too many looks. I like the unifedness of Leopard, I can't really say if I like it yet. But a unifed desktop was a long time coming.

I just wish they'd get rid of all the old Aqua gel looking junk like in the scrollbars. It's old and doesn't even look good anymore. My 2¢ worth..

I was so sick of the way Tiger looked that I did something I would never have done otherwise, I ran UNO.
I was tired of pinstripes and brushed metal and fake wood, etc. etc. etc. over the past 5+ years. Leopard may not be exactly what I wanted, but it looks better. I'm sure they'll be refining it for another year after it's released but that's Apple.
If they can make the funny little lights in the Dock indicate the process status, that will make it all the better.

tigers ui is the brushed metal which grags too much attention and is very annoying, leopards new ui is VERY clean and simple, and pleasing to the eyes

Tiger's UI is just about the same as Panther's, I'd say it was starting to show its age.
I prefer Leopard.

Just based on those images, I think that I prefer Tiger, but I use Uno, which solves the problem of an nonuniform look.

I also use UNO, but prefer Leopard's built in colors. You can always go to Appearance to change some things, or use programs like UNO or ShapeShifter. Would be nice to have a way to change themes, just for those who'd like to. I'd be happy with something a little lighter, but it's fine as is.

No. You have to explain why "it's a good thing because it is." No more of this stating "unified is good" and letting dangle why. From a usability perspective, unified is much, much worse.
Leopard's horrid UI is an example of Apple finally caving to the masses rather than following their own (vastly superior) instincts. Ditto the new iMac. Blegh.

The WWDC build of Leopard had me really worried. I liked the dock, but wasn't at all sure about the menubar or the dark, dull, gray windows. It really seemed to be a step away from the beautiful, fresh looking Aqua I've grown to love oh-so-much. After getting the chance to use it for a while the menubar just didn't bother me at all, but the gray windows just got worse and worse. I really couldn't stand them.
I read Phil Ryu's blog post and his thoughts regarding Leopard's UI. I didn't really agree what he was saying. I didn't think a space themed feel to the OS would work, and was really worried about upgrading to Leopard.
I've just had a chance to try out the latest Leopard build, though, and now all the formerly jarring pieces are fitting into place. The menubar, the dock, the new background, the darker active windows and the lighter inactive windows... all just feel better with a few more of the elements in place. The space desktop really does work better than the grass, when fitted in with everyone else. I'm still not sure if I can live without the watery goodness of Aqua, but I'm a lot less worried about Leopard now.
The folder icons still suck donkey euphemism though.

Leopard
The only thing I don't like is the new shinier traffic lights, but I'm sure I'll adjust to it and look back at the Panther/Tiger ones like "Wow those are dark and ugly".
Honestly, love it. From the new default desktop, the dock, menubar all have really gone from "Meh" to really all working together.

Same here, uno is great. I was upset after downloading the safari beta only to discover that it had the brushed interface.
