Problem with shell in OS X

Hello. I have an iBook 700 running OS 10.2. Whenever I try to use the terminal to shutdown, (using the command shutdown now) it pops up the black console, and then gives me a couple of lines saying this:

bootstrap_look_up falied (ipc/send) invalid destination port


Then the shutdown fails. I try to then exit out to the login window by typing 'exit' and then it repeats this message lots and lots of times and wont let me enter anything. I have to force reboot my computer. What is wrong and how can I fix it? Any help would be appreciated.

Have you considered going to the Apple menu to shut down?

Thats what I have to do. It also gives me that error other times. It is just the principle of something not working
