I've recently switched over from a PC to a mac (17" Powerbook), and I'm having trouble finding a good file sharing program. The free download of limewire sucks. Any suggestions?...

Yeah DON'T STEAL MUSIC!!
just kidding.
Search these boards for "poisoned" and "mlmac" two of the more popular programs and no spyware!!!
Don't pay for that Acquisition crap.

Poisoned runs on the same daemon as mlmac, it's just slower. Not worth it, get mlmac or acquisition.

Go with Poisoned or mlmac, they access Gnutella and FastTrack (Kazaa).
You have to pay for Acquisition and it accesses Gnutella only. To put it simply, it sucks... big time!

I don't think they do run the same daemon. Poisoned uses GiFT and mlmac uses mlnet (which has a built in web server). In my experience mlmac is a buggy piece of crap and poisoned actually works (having looked at the source code it looks like it was written by people who know what they're doing which may explain that)

I would understand that, but they must share something, because if you install Poisoned when you have Mlmac on the same mac, Poisoned doesn't work. And vice-versa.

Is that trying to run them at the same time or just having them both installed on the same machine? I've had both installed on mine at the same time but I haven't tried to run them together.

Get Poisoned (http://www.gottsilla.net/software.php?site=poisoned). It searches Kazaa's network and works pretty well. It'll also take downloaded mp3s and automatically import them into iTunes for you (you can set it to delete the original download as well so the file isn't unnecessarily duplicated on your hard drive).
BTW, congrats on switching. ;)

I like direct connect myself
Poisoned takes to long for the downloads to begin, but has fast download times, aquisition has become a paid service, limewire has a nice search interface, but often downloads seem to time out.
When using direct connect make sure you select the "require open slots" in the search window if you want a prompt download.
Direct Connect for Os X (automatic download) (http://fileforum.betanews.com/detail.php3?fid=1039486410)
