How can I find which processes are running on my mac and stop one of them? And, is there a way to keep it from starting next time I restart?

Activity monitor in the Utilities folder will take care of listing and killing processes. Not sure about preventing auto-starting if it's not in your startup items.

Apple Menu > System Preferences > Accounts > Login Items. Check to see if the program that starts the process is listed there.
