How do I burn CDs in Mac OS?

I have a question. I just bought my first Mac yesterday. My question is, how do I burn CDs?

What program is used.

I know music burning I just use iTunes. But if I wanted to burn a DVD data disc or regular CD-R disc. What program do I use? Is it i-DVD?

Just use OS X.

1. Insert your blank CD/DVD. See it appears on the desktop. Open it.
2. Drag the files/folders you want to burn inti the CD/DVD.
3. Press burn.

That's it. If you want more advanced burning options you can buy Toast, but for 99% of all burnings, OS X is fine.

I have another question.

I have a few cds i bought, How do I go about making a Backup CD.. For example, I want to create a backup of the 2 tiger restore CDs. How is this done, do I just copy all the files from the DVD to the HDD and back into a new DVD? I also have other cds like the Vmware I bought and the MS Office. I have a big tendency to loose CDs or break them, so I now always have a backup that sits in the safe.

Disk Utility makes it easy to copy CDs or DVDs for backup

If you're going to be doing a lot of ripping and burning, I greatly recommend investing in Roxio Toast (http://www.roxio.com/enu/products/toast/titanium/overview.html) :)

If you're going to be doing a lot of ripping and burning, I greatly recommend investing in Roxio Toast (http://www.roxio.com/enu/products/toast/titanium/overview.html) :)
Toast is indeed a lovely program with many uses.

But seriously, most burning tasks you can do in OS X. Sure, spend your money on Toast... but don't bother until you realise you actually need it.

Disk Utility does various things.

To duplicate a CD, look at Disk Utility's Help and search for "Duplicating a CD".

Admittedly it's easier in Toast.

Well I just tried it with a music CD and it didn't work. Seems to work with normal data CDs.

Toast is great if you want make different file-format discs, and to make DVD videos from movie files outside of iDVD.

Several years ago I recall crossing off Toast because of reports that Roxio had removed the ability to create a bootable image (NB create, not copy). If I were using mkisofs to create an ISO, that'd be lack of ability to create a FAT image to pass to the -b switch; if creating a bootable HFS volume, lack of functionality equivalent to bless.
