Real version, or Pirated?
I'm not accusing you, but if its pirated sounds like something could be missing or corrupt.

Pretty certain it's a problem with your Leopard DVD, probably corrupt in some way. Contact Apple (either through AppleCare or your nearest store) and get them to replace your disc.

lol I doubt that would be possible in his case.

Do you honestly think I'd come on here and post if it was pirated software?
Its a corrupt disk I eventually find out after 8 hours and numerous calls to tech support who got me to wipe my drive
They apologised and are sending a replacement which will take a week. They had the cheek to say that they won't be charging me for posting out a replacement  and offered no compensation.
Beware anyone else out there. If theres one bad one in the batch theres sure to be more

Todvader, how dare you accuse me. I bought leopard from the Applestore and don't use torrents. Its a bad disk, apple have screwed up. I just hope it doesn't happen to many others as its a pain in the :apple:

There was no need for that! And a week is rough... I would have thought it would be quicker.

Fair enough too. Let's not jump to conclusions people.

It's just that everyone's downloading the pirate versions and alot of people got burned by corrupt torrents. Since apple stores aren't selling it until over 12 hours (in America at least) and I've seen lots of new users here asking questions about pirated version, it just seems very suspicious since it's very rare to get corrupt discs.
If you indeed get your copy legit, I apologize.

I'm in Australia, hence the reason for receiving the disk ahead of most people (see Australia thread else where on the forum).

Then I apologize. For a second, I forgot about Australia and thought you pirated like 99% of the people who had questions related to problems installing leopard today.
Can't you just return it to the applestore you took it from? Do they reject it because it's opened?

I rarely post on this forum, I mostly read. However, I was tempted to post this time. TodVader, I think you should avoid jumping on people and making conclusions. Poor guy comes on here with problems with installing Leopard (and he is rightfully frustrated) and as soon as he thinks this is the one place that he can get help you accuse him of being unlawful. Sure tells us all a lot about you.

Which is why I apologized? Please mind your own business. Have you ever said something you shouldn't have said? Probably not M.R. perfect.
If the OP still has problems concerning my post, he can contact me and we will settle this in private.
Saying it says alot about me is saying alot about you. Don't tell people to not judge people when you do the exact same thing and generalize. We got questions about the pirated version for 2 days and this sounded suspicious. I forgot about Australia which just got the disc when he asked his question.
Anyways, this is my last post in this thread concerning this and if anyone has any problems with me, contact me via PM. THANKS.

Do not do the install. I just got off the phone with AppleCare, according to them, "lots" of the DVD are corrupted. I did a "skip" on the check and it totally fried my hard drive.

Fried your hard-drive? I can understand having to reformat and reinstall but physically destroying a drive? How did that happen?

Letting it check the DVD doen't make a difference since it passes for me then continues to the install, failing after just a couple of mins.

I had the same problem as You Am I describes at the beginning of this thread. I thought it weird that the DVD passed the verification, yet the 'basesystem' package could not be verified. Anyway, I took my mail order copy of Leopard to the store, and they exchanged it, no questions asked. I tried the new install DVD and had the same problem. I had been having strange problems with Tiger over the past 2-3 weeks (programs would not start, or would crash for no reason, etc.), so I then wondered if it was a hardware issue. Turns out it was. I ran the Apple Hardware Test, and found that I had a bad memory stick (Error: 4MEM/4/40000000: 1e156bc8). To narrow down which stick it was, I took one out, to see if the error kept happening. Turned out it was the aftermarket memory I installed about 6 months ago. I put the original factory memory back in it, and things are going better. Leopard is 80% installed.
So for those of you having the problem, you may want to try the Apple Hardware Test just for kicks. It may be on the Leopard DVD, but I ran it off the DVD that came with the MacBook. Instructions for running the test are on the Apple Support site here:

Contact apple again. Let them know you are upset. My first mac had an issue and I wrote a complaint, the next day I had an email that a new upgraded powerbook was being sent overnight.
As for hartobomba, we also saw a blue screen at work. We made a white macbook the beta tester at the office and it to saw the blue screen. FedEx dropped off OSX at 11AM, and we did not have the macbook working until 5:30 PM. We eventually had to format the hard drive of the macbook before it finally worked. We will not be installing 10.5 on any of our iMacs until something is fixed and we are certain we will not loose data. I really do love apple computers, software, and iPods but this 10.5 release is horrible. You leave the window world so you no longer see the blue screen. Now on the mac thats all you do see after the install. I really want to move our company over even though all the computers are backed up on servers it is just to much down time during the week to format all the iMacs hard drives. I feel apple really did let us down.

I skipped validation both when I burned the DVD on my MacBook and when going to install on my PowerBook because I was impatient.
The first time through it failed on an archive & install with the EpsonPrinterDrivers package. The second time, on BaseSystem on an upgrade install. I ran the upgrade install a second time and it's completed. I haven't changed media, and I had similar "run it twice" issues with one of the earlier seeds and figured it was just the old combodrive being grumpy about Dual Layer media.
Anyway, I'm not sure if you tried multiple times or not- but my PowerBook is now installed and rebooting.
Make sure you're backed up if you change install types.
Edit: System is up and running Leopard and I'm adding software but it does look like I have issues w/the EpsonPrinterDriver package, time to burn a new dvd...

(1) If I pirated the OS, that would have been illegal- talking about it is the least-significant part of the potential infringement morally speaking.
(2) You seem hell-bent on accusing people of piracy. I think you have issues- you should probably try to address them.
(3) For what it's worth, Apple put the ADC seed up for download yesterday and sent me e-mail inviting me to download it.
It looks like the Epson printer driver package is bad on my download, time to redownload.
Thanks for playing...

I got the same basesystem error when I tried to install on a core duo 17 inch iMac. This was the second machine I tried to install. My macbook pro (core 2 duo) worked just fine....
I had some problems initially where it didn't like the filesystem of the imac.. it seemed to really mess up the hard drive.. I couldn't repair the disk... eventually I had to just erase the disk to move on... that's when the basesystem error started happening...
this is a bought (mailorder) dvd... family pack actually...
I'm going to erase the had drive and try again....

I bought OSX Leopard family edition and installed yesterday on my 2.4GHz Mac Book Pro-- worked perfectly. Writing this post on that machine.
This morning took the same install disk and installed leopard on my PowerBook G4. In this case I chose to do an erase disk + install. I got the "Install Failed" error due "could not validate the contents of the 'BaseSystem' package."
It would appear this is NOT a problem with the install DVD because it installed fine on my MacBook Pro yesterday, so unless I damaged the disk in between (like not a chance) it's some other kind of problem.
Perhaps it's a problem between intel processors (MacBook Pro) vs. PowerPC (PowerBook g4)?
Totally stumped. Meanwhile my g4 is dead as a door nail.

I reinstalled a clean version of OS X Tiger on the dead PowerBook g4. It installed perfectly.
Then I "upgraded' to leopard again, thinking maaaaybe that BaseSystem error would go away. WRONG
It failed to install.
I wonder if this is a problem with powerPC macs installing Leopard.

I have a macbook pro and a g5 powerPC, and neither of them will correctly install Leopard.
After installing on the macbook pro all I got was an installation error. Upon restarting all I got was a black screen and the root directory. The only cure for this was to re-install tiger. (which is how I am able to post this)
I have installed it twice on the G5 and each time I get the blue screen on restart.
In both cases the disk passed verification.
I was on the phone for a total of 4 hours today (mostly on hold) and the best they could tell me is that "there must be something wrong with the disk" and they will send me a new one.
Just thought I would add to the pile...

A friend purchased a 5 license and tried to install leopard on his CD black macbook and the "essential package" could not be verified. He said it installed fine on his mac mini. What to do in this situation? He can't log back in to tiger...the gray screen is there with the apple icon and the spinning circle..can't do anything else. I helped hook up his mac to mine and by holding T to retrieve his information off of it as he did not back it up. I have a copy of leopard and I'm scared to open it and install it on my MBP. lol What do you guys think? Some people in the apple forums are claiming the GUID HD partition or something of that sort? Do you recommend running the apple hardware test before upgrading?

What you can try is: After you click on the install icon and click start. You will be asked to restart to begin the installation. So when the box pops up for the administrators password, enter it and when the computer goes into reboot, press and hold the "C" key until the first screen of the installation pops up. Remember, just hold the "C" key down and you should be able to install Leopard with no problem

The error validating the package happens _after_ you start the install. Took three tries for my PowerBook to successfully read the disk.

5 days after I started this thread I get a replacement disk. And guess what? Same error message. Does anyone have a solution to this?
After wasting another day of my life i've managed to get my machine back to tiger where it will stay.
I'll be looking for a full refund, never ever again will I buy new release software.
It looks like Apple have rushed this to market and have tried to blame 3rd party apps for their problems.

A definitive answer for anyone getting the:
"the installer could not validate the contents of the "basesystem" package"
or similar message.
The problem in 99.9% of cases arises from faulty RAM. The RAM can be factory installed Apple RAM or 3rd party ram. My machine had Apple RAM, passed all RAM tests, and worked fine with Tiger. The install of Leopard highlighted a problem with one of the sticks not picked up previously.
Despite the pain of losing and having to reinstall data, spending hours on the phone to Apple, hours researching the problem and 2 weeks without my machine while it was with Apple, I feel very lucky as my warranty was out in 2 weeks. Others may not be so lucky.

i had the same problem when i tried to install tiger on my powerbook g4. first apple said it was a bad disk. i ended up going back to the store so they could install it from their drive. then had to go back a couple months later so they could reboot my system from their drive (it had frozen up). i had continued problems with applications from that point on. each rep i spoke with said my hard drive was failing. i decided to try upgrading to leopard and got the same 'basesystem' error described on this thread, followed by a black screen and a root prompt. another bad disk?? i tried the installation process three times. same result. after reading the ram comments, i tried swapping out the 3rd party ram i installed last year with the original ram that came with my computer. leopard installed just fine! so i had to register on this forum and reply to this thread. thanks for the help from everyone. hope this helps someone else.

I have had the same error. The ironic thing is that I bought a family pack, and the first 3 computers before me who installed this (all within my family) installed it totally fine. I installed it and it installed fine. Then, after a month of having leopard, it gets really slow and it feels like i don't have any RAM. (I have 2 Gigs straight from apple when i bought it). i tried to restart, and it took an hour to restart and did nothing. Then i tried to reinstall leopard, and it had the same error. After erase and install, now it has a different error. It shows the sweet leopard "welcome" video, then asks me to register. I register, then it takes me to the leopard "welcome" video, then back to registration. This process repeats endlessly. I'm calling apple in the morning.

When installing Leopard on my Intel Duo Core iMac I got an EpsonPrinterDriver error saying installation failed. While still in the installer, I changed the startup disk to my hard drive and rebooted. It rebooted with Leopard installed and everything seems to be working okay. So I'm wondering if I should go to the trouble of getting a new install disk.

Don't apple's developers test this stuff before they sell it?????

Just wanted to say a DIMM was the problem.
Of course it was the last combination that had the problem dimm. It may have been faster to reinstall tiger and do the mem-test than to just remove banks and restart. Oh well, thanks for the help.

I too have been blighted by the Leopard upgrade that doesn't quite take. I have tried several times to load Leopard on my G5 and each time come up with the dreaded BaseSystem validation error, in the end just settling for Tiger. But of course, it is not so easy, is it? Tiger started playing up, usually the most unMacOSX-like behaviour, system freeze. My research led me to the same conclusion as 99% of users, bad RAM. Unfortunately, in a G5 iMac it has to be the hardwired RAM that is the problem. Fortunately, though, I seem to have stumbled onto a solution, I had previously downloaded the Applejack utilities suite from SourceForge and decided to run the Memtest option just to have a look at it, and, guess what? Since running it, I have not had a freeze. It has been 4 days, when before I could expect at least one freeze per day. I don't know if it is long term yet or whether it will help others in their problems but it can't hurt to give it a go, it doesn't cost anything (except maybe a donation??) and it may save having someone take your money to do a RAM transplant that may not be necessary. Long live Mac.
PS. I haven't tried Leopard again yet, will stick with Tiger for a while.

I'm in Australia, hence the reason for receiving the disk ahead of most people (see Australia thread else where on the forum).
I'm new to this forum but it is good to see there are other 'convicts' out there doing the right thing, go the Aussie Mac users.

If you are trying to install Leopard or earlier versions of OS X and it won't install and you get obtuse error messages or something like The Installer Could Not Verify the Contents of the BaseSystem package...CHECK YOUR RAM...it is very likely a bad memory module...this drove me crazy for a week, buying new hard drives, new versions of OS X, etc, until I finally discovered that is was a bad RAM module. It would be nice if they could give you more intuitive error messages...hear that APPLE????

Very grateful for this thread--we got this error on my husband's laptop; he had upgraded the RAM a year ago but didn't save the old sticks, so we just removed a memory stick...bingo, install worked. Much frustration ended.:D

I too appreciate the discussion in this thread, at least that which is on point. I encountered the same type situation and error messages etc as the original poster, in attempting to perform an upgrade to Leopard on my G4 mac mini (vintage Aug'05). I tried suggestions above in this thread, but the problem persisted. Both hard disk and RAM appeared okay. Then, when doing other business and before I got around to obtaining advice or a replacement DVD from the local Apple Store, I noticed that the internal DVD-reading optical drive in the Mac mini (shown by Disk Utility as "MATSHITA CD-RW CW-8124") had developed a fault in burning CD's, in that freshly made discs failed verification. Reasoning that the problem with Leopard might be due to using that unreliable drive for installation, I tried an external (LaCie) DVD/RW unit I had in reserve, and on the first try Leopard installed with no problem whatsoever. Thus the optical drive hardware may be another possible source of fault when installation fails due to issues with verification.
