I know this is not a PC forum, but I think I post this here, since we have at least some PC users here :)
I'm in desperate need for an mp3-player for my IBM Thinkpad... actually that's the only program that I want to install besides kazaa, but I don't know which one...
- it has to be small and snappy and run on Win98 (I deinstalled XP pro)
- skins are not important as long as the interface isn't too ugly
- the funktionality should be similar to Audion or iTunes (simple and easy to use, playlists, eq...)
- I don't need a ripping function (I do that on my tiBook anyways...)
-I don't want to use winAmp (big, ugly etc...), neither WMP...
- it has to be freeware...
can anyone recommend a program?
thanks

Whilst you have said you don't want WinAmp I'm not sure why! You can make it's display tiny, and the program itself is very lean. It is not an iTunes replacement though (does not really handle a library like iTunes). I used Real Jukebox for a while, but it's pretty poor. I've used Music Match as well. It's OK, but no iTunes.

I agree that Winamp is the best usually. When I had a PC, I had a few others that were pretty good, too, but that was 6 years ago so I don't remember what the programs where. I got them from C|net download.com, so maybe go there and just browse through their mp3 player selection. They give the name, size, descrpition, and a message forum for each selection so you can see what it is like and see general opinions from others as to how they feel about each program.

hehe, thanks guys for the hints, this is what I did:
- I checked c.net for players, but I did'nt like any of them stuff...
- then I installed MusicMatch basic, but the flaky behavior drove me nuts... so I deinstalled it again...
o.k., now I ended up using *drum-roll*... guess what, "winAmp2 lite* (minimal installation)...
yeah PB G5 and robbieduncan, you both were right in the first place... this configuration is exactly what I was looking for: it runs fine, is small and has no annoying gadgets and banners...
;)
thanks for your advice

In my days of rebelling against mp3 player conformity, I used Sonique instead of WinAmp (though, on my PC I'm now in line with the masses). . . its been years though, but I was always pleased with it.
Just my $ .02

Sonique!
Awesome, truely awesome.
Don't know if you can still find it, but it was at 1.96 last I checked. Even found an iTuneish visualization for it.
