So i ran software update and it was downloading and then installing the new OS X 10.2.8 I started playing some game on my computer and the install was close but not done yet. The game launched and the screen went white and froze. So I manually restarted my computer and it came back up and now my dock is gone. It's just not there. I check the mac info and it says I'm now running 10.2.8 but I'm almost positive that install didn't finish. But software update won't let me reinstall it because it thinks I'm already running it. However, the install log for sofware update says I haven't installed anything since the java update. How do I fix this? Is there a way to reinstall 10.2.8? Someone PLEASE help. OH and almost all of my apps keep unexpectedly quitting so that's a bit of a problem too.

Not yet, but the update will be located here (http://www.info.apple.com/support/downloads.html) soon.

I lost my dock when i tried to make it transparent using TransparentDoc 2.0.2. Luckily this program gives an option to back up ur dock before making changes. I restored the dock.app, everything is normal now.

Yikes. Sounds like we should hold off on installing 10.2.8 update.

well if you read on the apple site it says that some third party software may cause problems with the upgrade, and if you have done system modifications (like using thrid party software) they may cause problems to!! :p

there is a new version of the dock included in the 10.2.8 update and any software that modifies/replaces the dock (like cleardock or the minimize in place hack) will probably cause problems. luckily, it seems to install over themes without a problem.

It happened to me as well. I updated to 10.2.8 and tried to use transparent dock and after restarting it was not there. Is there anyway to replace the files or do I have to reinstall 10.2.8? Please help this sucks.

When I get my new Powerbook, should I install the upgrade first thing.. in order to prevent any 3rd party conflicts later down the line?

It will probably come with 10.2.8, but how is that related to the missing dock issue?

Next time, try asking a little bit nicer.

Look in this path to see if you have it: Hard Drive -> System -> Library -> CoreServices: It should be in that folder. If it's not, you need to reinstall it. This can be done by choosing the installer packge for 10.2.8 (actually downloading the installer, not just through software update), selecting "view package contents" from the contextual menu (right click, or control-click). From there, look for a dock installer.

that realy sucks
my only suggestion for a quick fix would be to repair permisions in disk utility. Otherwise, I wish you luck on your wait for 10.2.8 vII:(

go to your home directory...

/library/preferences/com.apple.dock.plist

try deleting that one...

and for any of you running panther and codetek dockextnder...you gotta delete the dockextender pref, JUST the main one, not the ones with numbers, and then to put the menus in your dock, you need to find the dockextender prefpane in the library's folder and show package contents, then drag each menu to your dock.

can you be a little more specific?...i did "view package contents" and couldn't find the dock installer and even if I would what should I do with it? Do you think I should reinstall the dock from my original 10.2?!...well the dock is now there but I'm still having problems with minimize feature (I had minimize before the update) and the thing just isn't compatible with the final version Transparentdock 2.1 and even if I erase it, it doesn't help...hm...this is the first serious problem I encountered with OSX...

still..

Do you currently have third party dock software installed? If that's what's messing up the dock, I can't help you. This third party software is not supported by Apple, so it's the dock modifier who's responsible for making their software work with Apple's, not the other way around. If the dock works without any third party software, then I'd hold off on installing the other stuff until you know it'll work. Let me know if it's the basic dock that's not working.
