i have a new powerbook (as many people know since i've been asking lots of beginner questions). what is the point of having netscape navigator 4 on the machine under OS 9? can i just delete the folder and forget about it?

You probably won't ever use Netscape. And you could always download and reinstall it if you wanted it later. Do you have plans to use Mac OS 9 at all?

On the other hand, you are unlikely to be short on disk space (at least not yet!), so why bother removing applications?

The only reason that I would keep it is that if there is a problem with Mac OS X and you are able to boot into Mac OS 9 and download a fix, you've got a browser for it.

But if it's a new PowerBook, then it can't boot into OS 9 in the first place, right?

If it can't boot into OS 9 he'd still be able to use it under Classic mode. Netscape Navigator doesn't support CSS though, and is a 4+ year old browser, so why'd someone would still want to use it is beyond me...

so basically i can remove all of the os9 applications without any repercussions, right? why do they even come installed with new macs? its not like someone is going to choose navigator 4 over safari/firebird. also, why bundle outlook expres for the mac when the program looks like it was made in the mid 90s? this all destroys apple's image of clean, easy to use software.

Those old apps shouldn't matter to you. They are there because of the evolution of Mac OS X vs. Mac OS 9; First you could boot in OS 9 AND also run Classic, and many people needed to do so. Then you could only run OS 9 in Classic, and some people needed to do so. Eventually, very few will need Classic, and maybe someday Classic won't be installed by default. But think of the protests if they removed something that SOME people are used to using. More people would say "Hey, where's my Netscape?" than "I don't need Netscape." Leaving 'em is the easiest path for Apple, and I'm not surprised they don't clean house.
