disappearing sharing prefs

Has anyone encountered a problem in 10.2.6 where sharing preferences reset each time the computer starts up?
it's really annoying if you are on a network and have to turn file sharing on every time.
I have at least one friend who has the same prob on her iBook.
any ideas?

When these kind of things happen I always try these things:
Delete the prefs, if that doesn't work then repair the disk permissions. Be sure to boot off the OS X install CD, then use the installer's Disk Utility to repair disk permissions of the boot volume.
