View Full Version : Does MSN Messenger Suck for the Mac?

I recently downloaded MSN Messenger for Mac. I'm quite disappointed with it. It automatically signs me out all the time and it won't even let me paste text when I'm typing. (Unless I'm doing something stupid.) What's with that?

Anyone else have a similarly negative opinion about MSN Messenger?

YES!! compared to the PC version... Our version looks like its 5 years old or something. Very annoying. M$, well as for user experience is fine, get my messages to mates and it never logged mne out...

I don't have the problems you are having, but yes, it is a bit lacking. MSN 6 for Windows kicks!

I get most frustrated with the incessant signouts. I can be happily typing away to a friend and BAM! It's gone and signed me out again.

Yep MSN for mac sucks. The OS X version is buggy, slow and looks crap. If Microsoft were to get off it's backside and spend some of it's $50Billion cash reserve, they could rival iChat.

Did you really think MS would release a good product on the Mac, especially now? I'm beginning to think that Office's decent performance was a MBU brain-fart.
Remember they can't get IE to compete with Safari's integration why would they be able to do anything else right.
And not to be pedantic because I don't want to start a fight, but isn't using MSN putting more money in their outrageous coffiers?

It is slow (especially during signing in), but mine never signs out mysteriously, hangs, crashes or anything.

I've never had all of those problems. The only real problem I've had is that the network was busy and it couldn't deliver the message. The PC versions were doing the same thing.

Since version 3.1, it's been much better. Version 3.5.1 is actually pretty good but my reasons for using it are almost gone now.

Signed it before I started the thread.

Am I just a dumbass or is it impossible to copy and paste text? (If you think I'm a dumbass, don't bother saying it directly. ;))

I don't mind the look or the features, but when I have 5 windows, or a conversation with 3 people + in it, it lags up the WHOLE mac.

I'm not trying to fight here either, but why would it give them more money? It's a free download, if anything they lose money due to bandwidth/traffic costs.

I chat all the time on MSN Messenger for the Mac and I have never had many problems with it. I would rate it below iChat, but above Yahoo. It is lacking some of the features of iChat, but it has been solid for me.

Wow, I just got this message for the first time ever. Maybe making changes to make their servers more mac compatible.;)

I got that one quite a lot when I used Windows, but I've only seen it once since getting a Mac.

you think that the servers that run the mac version are different from the windows version? It would allow them to keep track of how many they have on each side ....

I don't think any Mac users use it because they want to. The only reason I use it is because all my Windows friends do. And all my Mac friends use iChat.

MSN should dump their current code and remake it for mac entirely.

Heres my comparison with iChat

MSN
Very long Startup time: 20 seconds usually
Very laggy, cant have more that 2 windows open
It hogs my internet connection, downloads half in speed
Horrible interface
Adverts
Logs me out without asking me

iChat
Short startup time: 3 seconds at most
No lag, can have 10 windows open and its fine
Doesn't hog my connection, can do downloads in background
Great interface
No adverts
Stable
Audio/Visual Capabilites

The only bad thing about iChat is that its only compatible with mac os x users, and AIM PC users.

If my mates didnt all use MSN, id switch in seconds.

I'm still running OS 9.2 compared to the Windows version, well it's like comparing a Geo Metro to a Mercedes - Benz E55 AMG... still gets you from point A to point B but without any of the comforts or performances

How does the 9.2 version compare to the X._ version?
