Name thief!
There should be a utility that can recover the files (I don't know for sure because amazingly I've never used or even looked much into utilities). I think Norton might have something to do that. Basically, when you delete a file, it simply removes all the references to the data on your disk. The data itself is still there, it just can't be recognized by the computer. A utility would search the entire drive looking for anything that might be a file. If you do much work on your computer, it might actually overwrite the area where the "deleted" data is located, so you'll want to act fast so you don't lose anything.

To undelete files with a recovery tool you have to have it installed first.
You can pay a data recovery service lots of $ to recover data as long as it hasn't been overwritten too much.

You need a disk utility like Norton Undelete which is part of the Norton Utilities package which has just recently been released for Mac OS X. It will search your hard drive for all deleted whole files. Again though you must act fast and not use the computer much if at all because you could overwrite data on your lost data. Also, it would be a good idea to have a second HD on hand because there is nothing more irritating than Norton finding the files, and then while rescueing them, it writes them over other files you wanted back.
Good Luck!!

So they use an index to keep track of files. OK. Makes sense. Your file has to be in the index to be found.
