fixing up an imac

I am trying to fix up my buddies imac by cleaning everything off and putting jaguar on..which i did.. but in the process i removed os9 and now my screen is blurry. I want to install firmware updates but can't without os9.. is this correct? Furthermore, I have installed 64mb of non-apple ram and I hear that this might cause problems.. is this addressed with the firmware updates?

Unless the ram is bad, it is no problem having non apple ram. The first part of your quesiton, I am less sure about, but I think that you can install firmware updates without os9 installed, but I am not for certain. Hopefully, someone with more knowledge on this particular subject will post soon and give you more help
