In iChat is there a way to put contacts into groups like you can in the official AIM client? Also, is there a simple way to enter new contacts like you can in the official client? I don't like having to go to the built-in address book every single time, especially because I never use it otherwise.

Another question...

I'm using the version of iChat that came with Jaguar and I haven't upgraded to AV yet. What else is knew other than support for video and speech? Should I bother upgrading if I'm only going to be using text messaging?

Some bug fixes, mostly. It actually tells you when people log off, for example.

Under General preferences, you can check the "Use Groups in Buddy List" option. Then, an extra line on the buddy list will appear specifying the active group. Select the group there, then add to it through the address book.

Is there any way to copy the photos and names of ichat users from one Mac to another? I mean... I've set up custom icons, and names for all my iChat buddies, and would like to copy the whole shebang over to another mac...

If you have a .Mac account you can use iSync to sync both computers. You can have this run every hour so you know both computers match each other. I know it syncs Address Book and iCal, but it may do other things too. Since iChat uses the Address Book app then it would copy the names and images for your buddies.

Is there any other way, supposing that you didn't have iSync? In the official AIM client, you can export and import buddy lists. Is that possible in iChat?

Anyone know if iChat will ever support animated gif buddy icons? hehe

I don't know but that would be great. :)

Is it possible to make a profile with iChat? I've tried looking in the help section but all it says about profiles is how to view other users' profiles.

Yes, I was wondering the same thing about having a profile in iChat.

I'd really like to advertise my usage of a superior computer to all my windoze pals.

As well as posted annoying links, random quotes, ya know, the stuff profiles are made of..
:)

No native support yet, but you can do that and more with iChat Streaming Icon (http://ichat.pardeike.net/). Animated GIFs, Flash animation, Quicktime movies, or even video camera streams -- all into your buddy icon. Very cool.

Also, not about iChat but Adium 1.6.2 has trouble loading other users' profiles. It works sometimes and sometimes it gives me an error message: "Error loading info, try again later." It loads for some users but not others. They all say Service: Free(?) so I'm not sure if its anything to do with what they're using. All these profiles show fine in the official AIM client.

Anybody else have this problem, or know why this is happening?
