posting for a friend who has a wireless network and a gateway vista machine and a new MacBook he reports that the mb is sluggish online while the gateway zips along. Is there a setting he needs to change

That's a pretty broad set of possible things that could be wrong, but the two that come to mind offhand are some sort of wireless funkyness (the MB is either getting a weaker signal--does it work better when he's close to the router?--or it's an odd incompatibility with the particular router) or maybe a DNS problem.

To test the DNS thing, try manually entering the DNS servers 208.67.222.222 and 208.67.220.220 into the Network preferences on the MB (they're the open DNS servers from http://www.opendns.com/ ). If that fixes it, there's some sort of lag for his MB talking to the DNS server his router is supplying (which should in turn come from his ISP); I've seen this happen once before (on a wired network) and never did pin down the cause, but there are a number of threads here with suggestions.

Or just stick with those DNS servers, if that fixes it--they should be readily available and completely legit to use.

If neither helps... hmm.
