Whenever I try to right click and "open-with" a file, It takes forever. It spins up my TM drive and shows me all the app options backed up. If I accidentally click the wrong version (the one that is one the TM drive instead of the main version) it usually crashes due to lack of permission on the TM drive. How do I get TM to backup my apps, but not show them in the Open With menu?

I have absolutely no idea if this will work, and I haven't tried it as I don't use Time Machine (yet) and the tip seems to be written for a previous version of Mac OS X but I'm sure someone else here will be able to double check this for you -- so I wouldn't recommend trying this until someone else can confirm it.

Over time, you may find that the Open With menu gets cluttered with duplicates, older versions or applications you thought you deleted long ago. To get rid of these, you need to use Terminal. Open up Terminal (from Applications/Utilities) and paste the following line:

/System/Library/Frameworks/ApplicationServices.framework/Frameworks/LaunchServices.framework/Support/lsregister -kill -r -domain local -domain system -domain user
