With the iTunes music store making use of the Safari rendering engine on the mac, have they done the same with the PC version? Could there be an iminent release of Safari for Windows...

One part of me hopes so, but another warns against it, lest Apple become nothing more than a software company. No, I don't think they'll be porting it anytime soon. If Apple releases all their software, iApps and all, for Windows, then they'd be losing a HUGE incentive for people to switch. When I worked for them, I and my coworkers touted the iApps above all else -- most of the people that switched did so because of them.

I briefly thought about that too, but it's doubtful.

That being said, download Mozilla Firebird 0.7 for Windows. (Not to be confused with Mozilla 1.5). Apple would never admit it, but Firebird and it's cousins (Camino) are essentially what they had in mind when they made Safari. It's faster than IE, it has popup blocking, tabbed browsing, it's skinnable, it's open source, and it's FREE.

Check it out at http://www.mozilla.org/products/firebird/

Check out other threads on this topic. Safari is not a "trojan" like iTunes - Apple has no gain and no profit from porting it to Windoze. It wouldnīt help converting people to Mac. It was simply made to be independent from the Explorer on Mac. Thatīs it.

yeah, safari was made because the Mac platform needed it desperately, not because Apple wanted to make a superior browser. So at very least it would be a long time before it got ported, and only then if it gets really infamous as the best browser. otherwise it'll stay where it is.

Apple is a hardware company. All the cool operating systems and apps we enjoy are just supposed to attract us to the Mac. iTunes Music Store exists to sell iPods and iPods, in turn, exist to sell Macs. It's all a lure. If Apple takes all their cool stuff and makes Windows versions available then you don't need a Mac anymore to enjoy it. They'd be shooting themselves in the foot.
