Do you mean what is the discount or what constitutes you being a student?
I think the discount percentage depends on the item.

From apple's website:
-------------------------------------
Who is Eligible To Purchase
The following education individuals are eligible to purchase through the Apple Store for Education individuals:
* Faculty or staff member of a public or private Higher Education Institution in the United States
* Student currently attending or accepted into a public or private Higher Education Institution in the United States
Qualifying purchases per academic school year (July 1 - June 30):
* Power Mac, iMac, eMac, PowerBook, or iBook - One per year
* Printers - One per year
* Displays - Two per year
* Software - Two per year
Agreement
I agree that I am a member of one of the defined groups above eligible to purchase and that the products being purchased direct from Apple Computer, Inc. are for my own personal, education, and/or research use.
-------------------------------------------
You can go here to find your school
http://store.apple.com/Catalog/US/Images/routingpage.html
It will then take you to the education store. The discount is usually about 10% for hardware. However, it will depend slightly on the product you buy. The discount can be more for software. For instance students get 10.3 for $69 instead of $129.

I just bought two machines with an education discount. All you need is a student id and driver license (or other state issued ID).
Your school has to qualify. Look your school up on the apple site...the price reflected there will reflect at the store.
The discounts vary :) But its nice haveing three household members enrolled at a university. If you aren't, find a PC user somewhere who is in school and make them buy your Apple for you :) LOL

OH wow, they make you give em your student id now?? Way back when I bought my ibook, all I did was say "yes" to the salesperson on the phone...and wham, 100 bucks off. Didn't realize they changed their way of handling it....good idea

I used the student discount before. They only asked to see the student id. They didnt look at it to closely or even take down any university info.

I purchased Jaguar online without any student ID. No problems, no questions. I'm not sure how they verified my "student-ness".

Yeah, but has it arrived yet? Still time for them to stop it!

I just clicked yes on the website and it took me to a "special student website" with lower prices ;)

hhhmmm, so they haven't changed their policy...or just some places check once in a while. Kinda' weird since it's an extremely easy way to get an instant apple discount (300 bucks off a G5, just for saying yes)....wonder why apple hasn't gotten a little more strict on this?? Maybe because it would be near impossible to verify/check every persons ed. background...that and the thousands of school/universities that qualify. Oh well, I'm not complaining....guess I'm gonna' be "in school" forever ;)
