Resolution Independence?

When will there be resolution independence for mac os x?
imo the text size overall is too small to read... and if you make the resolution smaller, everything is blurry... so hopefully resolution independence will come out soon

p.s. doesn't Vista have resolution independence??

No - it is just a downside to LCD displays. Was merely just saying that resolution independence won't help LCD's display stuff better when not using the native resolution.

It's in 10.5. It's just not activated by default, because most programs still don't play well with it...they work, but not everything looks the way it should. You can activate it manually, but expect breakage.

Neither Vista nor XP has resolution independence. Just being able to change the font size doesn't cut it. The potential is there in Vista's rendering engine, but it's not used.

It doesn't work the way it's intended to, which means it isn't a feature yet. By your measure, RI was also in 10.4.

It might not be RI, but DPI scaling has been supported in Windows since XP. Vista's looks better than XP's does, and both work as intended.

It has been supported, but resolution independence is a whole different matter. Resolution independence means that every little bit of graphics on Leopard can be scaled, including Finder icons. Leopard supports RI. However, the developers don't just yet. There can't be resolution independence without forcing developers to use vector graphics into their applications. For that to happen, some time will pass.

The fact that the foundation is there means most of the work is done. So it's reasonable to expect that it will be enabled closer to sooner than later.

Agreed. There are also several Apple applications they'll need to smooth out, as a number of them continue to function incorrectly at scales above or below 100%.

Certainly. But this doesn't change the fact that Leopard still doesn't have RI. It's closer to having it than Tiger was, but it's not nearly done. Apple hasn't even finished drawing the Finder correctly.
