I ask my service provider for a way to transfer files from a friend in another town to my service provider and they replied: Does this sound right?
David,
You will need a static ip along with an ftp server as well as a ftp
client.
Although we do offer a static ip, vpn's and ftp are the preference
(responsiblity) of the customer for setup and networking. For static ip
information do contact our sales dept at 1-800-527-2404 ext 4

prairie iNet. lol... where are you at? i work right by their des moines office. anyway, FTP is really not terribly secure, and not something i'd be using on a regular basis for this sort of thing. Since you have a Mac, you can network right over TCP/IP. get a static address if they don't charge you, otherwise you'll need to give your IP address to your friend each time it changes. You could also set up a private Hotline server, which is what i would personally do. but really, FTP isn't worth the security risks.

they charge for static IP. How expensive is it for the private hotline? the friend has a home movie to share. security should be much of a problem. I would appreciate any instruction for the FTP or otherwise. I am located 44 miles south of Chicago, about as far east as prairieinet goes.
