Do I need to do anything special to uninstall classic on a Powerbook?

you can pretty much drag the System Folder and any OS 9 apps to the trash, obviously you need to be in OS X for this. beyond that i think X recognizes that Classic is no longer installed.

It says "This Operation Cannot Be Completed Because This Item Is Owned By A Root".

Click on System Folder, and the "Get Info" from the File menu. Under the "Ownership and Permissions" tab, change the owner to your user account, or grant "Read/Write" access to your account in one of the other fields. It might ask you for your admin password. After this, you can drag the folder to the trash.

otherwise
open the terminal
su
enter the password
cd /
rm -rf *Folder1*
rm -rf *Folder2*
that s it.
obviously you have to replace Folder1 and Folder2 by the correct names, I can't check them right now as I haven't gotten classic installed.
