Best Video / Media Player out there?

I am getting quite frustrated with quicktime. after downloading many videos over the past few months, i have found that about 20 percent those dont' play in quicktime. they wont' open in windows media player or Video Lan. Before deleting the files, i tried them on a PC. and they worked! Is there a way to add codecs to quicktime? if so, how and where can i find them. also what is the best media player you khow of that can play the most file types. i just wnat to be aple to view my files!

i already tried this. i've heard of something called mplayer...what is that. also, how and where can i add functionality to quicktime?

i like vlc the best, though its not as quick as quicktime haha

Grab VLC - I've never heard anyone having troubles with it before.... Or is this the one you tried and has some issues with?

From my understanding, you can play everything through QuickTime if you have the proper codecs. Just go to divx.com, go the the section for Mac/QuickTime and try installing a bunch of codecs and see if that helps.

I have had files which didn't open in VLC, so I use Mplayer for those. I have also installed 3ivx and DivX codecs for QT, but usually I have audio problems with them. Somehow the audio seems to "stay behind" with the video.
Whenever I want to watch a media file, I first try it in QT (fastest), if that won't work I try VLC (works nearly all of the time). If that fails I try Mplayer.

I happen to like mPlayer too. I've yet to encounter any media file it cannot open.

VLC usually will play just about anything, even incomplete files. mPlayer for the files that VLC wont open.

What videos don't work in quicktime? Could you give use some links so we can see what the problem is?

i will try to find the files (what a good idea) but since they didn't work before I had all your help i deleted most if not all of them. Where can I find a list of codecs (1st, 2nd, and 3rd party) to make quicktime better. Is there even 2nd party? lol.

mplayer is much better then vic in my opinion. now all we need is one player that does what quicktime, mplayer, vic, and windows media player can do. I dont' want four media players!

Try anything in DivX and you'll see what he means. I've found plenty of stuff that even after installing the DivX codecs into Quicktime still won't play. mplayer plays nearly everything.

While we're on the topic, am I really missing something here, or can QuickTime not display things full screen? And if not, WHY NOT?! That alone makes VLC and mplayer the obvious choices...

Yep.

QuickTime Player only plays movies full-screen if you have purchased QuickTime Pro < ab-so-lu-te-ly no idea why.... >.

But stuff like Xinema (http://www.versiontracker.com/dyn/moreinfo/macosx/18183) can play them full-screen.... (there are more, but usually VLC or MPlayer are used)
