I've done a search for this, and found alot of threads, but none that help me.

I want to use irc, and I downloaded BitchX (it was my favorite when I used linux).

However, when I untar the file, im left with a folder with documents inside.

typing 'BitchX' in the terminal does nothing, and clicking the documents inside the folder only open the terminal.

does bitchx not work with panther??

Im not used to the 'tar' command - how do I untar a file in the terminal?

(im used to using 'guntar -xvf "file" ' in linux, and that surely dosnt work in OS X/Panther)

Did you download the Binary for OS X or did you download the source code? If you downloaded the source code then you need to compile it first.

I tried both a while back and failed.

If you want you can look for alternative IRC clients (there are plenty around). Just search for them at http://www.macupdate.com

I tried downloading both.

The binary file just opened the terminal and nothing more.

I downloaded the source too, but I cannot compile it because I dont have gcc or the developer tools - which leads me to the question im about to post (I got a g4 and it came with 2 restore cd's and I dont know how to get/install gcc and the developer toos).

are you running OS 10.3 if so XTools is preinstalled

if your in 10.2 then go to the developer section of the apple website and download the developer tools for os 10.2 ... just dig around there and you'll find what you need.

I have Panther 10.3.2

In system profiler xTools is not listed as being installed.

When I run './configure' it says "checking for gcc.......no"

and 'gcc' is not listed as a command in the terminal either.

Ive searched my whole system and cannot find a single reference to xtools or gcc - where should I look and how would I know if I have it?

Ive been told over and over it comes with panther but if that was the case then I shouldnt be having this problem.

10.2 has never even been on this system. I bought it bran new with panther installed.

It comes with panther on a separate disk called "XCode", you must install that program.

I only have "Software Restore" disks 1 and 2 that came with my g4.

Will I have to buy xCode cd somewhere?

bummer...
