Is it possible to install windows 98 on bootcamp? [Archive]

Highly unlikely it would ever work.

If you need to run Win98, try one of the virtualization packages.

I think bootcamp requires WinXP SP 2 or Vista.

No, you need XP SP2 or Vista. ^^ Should be able to install it using virtualization.

Why 98? That is so far behind in everything, esp. security. Get up to date, get XP.

I miss playing around with DOS and stuff and old dos games that don't run virtualization very good... I don't see why it wouldn't install its the drivers that might be the problem?

I might be wrong, but I dont think drivers exist for any of the hardware. Think about it, the hardware is a decade older than the OS, that is a lifetime in IT.

The audio is ac 97 so that must exist..... I'm guessing ethernet exist..... I guess its the video card driver that would be the problem

Yes, drivers exist for ac97 audio and ethernet, but not the hardware in current computers. MS doesn't even support 98 anymore.

The hardware will work...... Windows 98 will just use one core of hte cpu instead of 2

Windows 98 does NOT have drivers for any recent generation of hardware, while it MAY work* (using the term loosely) it probably will not be stable, and many, many features may not work at all.

If you can get it running, kudos to you. Be sure you know exactly what you are doing, because bootcamp will not do it for you, you will need to partition yourself and do the install manually. If those old games are that important to you, good luck.

I doubt the Apple Drivers would support it.

Not to mention, it would be a bitch to set up.

Install XP and set it to a classic theme.

However, if you actually have a real use for it, you could probably install it in VirtualBox (google it) on Mac or Windows.

If you miss the old DOS games, you can always try DOSBox (www.dosbox.com/).

I have actually tried to install Windows 98 (also tried ME) and it installs very slow and crashes when it also makes it to the finish. :(

Has anybody had any lock trying this? :confused:

I would second VirtualBox. I installed Windows 98 to see how it would work and works well. My guess is that any 3D intensive games will not play well - not sure if there were any available for Windows 98.

Windows 98 required some patches to run anything above an AMD K6 500 at the time. Unless you have a patched-to-heck-and-back version of Windows 98 I don't think it would be feasible anyway.

I don't know guy, I've messed around with some VERY old games under Win XP. Is there anything in particular you want run/mess around in? I know what you're feelin, I get nostalgic sometimes too.

I think windows 98 second edition has that patched already and people make unoffical service packs for 98 second edition
