Can anyone tell me how to sync iPhone application data with data on the host (via iTunes or mobileMe)?

When installing apps such as omnifocus (http://www.omnigroup.com/applications/OmniFocus/iphone/), an extra checkbox appears under the host's system preferences -> mobileme -> sync tab. Is this done via a framework? And how does the iPhone app communicate with the cloud?

OmniFocus, and any other third party sync capable application, does it all on it's own. No framework...

Since extra checkboxes appear in the mobileMe system preferences panel, there must be hooks.

Where? On your Mac? I have OmniFocus syncing to my phone and there is no OmniFocus checkbox in Sync on my Mac...

ok, my mistake, it wasn't omnifocus, but other apps such Mark/Space Notebook Notes. Yes, the sync panel I was referring to is on the Mac (see attachment), but I'm also looking for info about the iPhone counterpart.
