View Files From OSX In Win

Hey

I have a problem, i want to install bootcamp on my 24" imac but i need to get all my music files off my OSX partitioned disk onto my Windows Partition is their any easy way of me doing this? Currently all my music is stored on a external hard drive which is formatted in the OSX extended file system.

If I understand you correctly, you want to move files from OS X into your Windows/Boot Camp partition? If you format your partition as Fat32, you can move files across easily (whilst running OS X). If you need to access your Mac partition whilst running Windows, this document (https://docs.rice.edu/confluence/display/ITTUT/Access+OS+X+partition+from+Windows+in+Boot+Camp) might be some help.

Id look into MacFuse & NTFS3G before formating your windows partition FAT32 as its a old & cruddy file system with limitations, but for the external like chilipie stated HFSexplorer is a good bet

You have lost me now, all i want is a simple way to get my music off OSX into Windows.

I was just saying FAT32 becuase that is what a guide said to use. *shurugs*

Yeah, I realise NTFS is a better file system, but my Windows partition is only used for gaming and I like being able to download updates in OS X and just drag and drop them over to Windows without faffing around with more software.

How far have you got with this? Have you already created a Boot Camp partition and installed Windows?

Me too now as in your original post you stated you haven't installed windows yet that is why i suggested you formated it NTFS rather than FAT32, if you only want to get your stuff of the external & onto your windows (this is where I'm confused) partition then HFSExplorer should work regardless if your windows partition is formated NTFS or FAT32

I am at the reserch stage, i will format it NTFS if it is not going to cause a problem?

I was merly saying that i thought u HAD to use Fat32 as that is what a guide had said, i need to run a few apps in windows using my music that is why i need to get the audio transfered.

One more thing to keep in mind when choosing File Systems, according to the Boot Camp documentation FAT limits the partition to 32 GB. If you want a larger partition you may have to choose NTFS.

Ok now were on the same page, nope formating it NTFS wont cause problems, just remember OS X can read but cant write to it, for that you need the progs i stated in the above posts

You can use this program to copy your OSX files to Windows when you are in Windows. Works fine for me. It's Java based and free.

Don't wanna sound rude mate but if you read your way threw this thread HFSExplorer been mentioned at least 3 times

Hey, I'm about to put windows on my new macbook, and want to use NTFS if I can for the Windows partition.
If I do that, put all my music and videos into the NTFS windows partition, OSX can play those media files yes?

I dunno about media files as i use iTunes & my vids through OS X, if not id have thought you can through Fusion try going onto VMwares site & seeing if its possible

Neil so let me just get this straight

If i install windows on a 80GB Partition under bootcamp formatted under NTFS then install HFSExplorer in windows i will be able to browse to the media files on the external disk formatted under OSX and transfer them files into the windows 80GB Partition yes?

Sorry if i am acting dumb here i just wanted to be sure.
