Bluetooth 1.5 has been released in software update.
Details:
Bluetooth 1.5 for Mac OS X provides support for Bluetooth enabled headsets and printers.
NOTE: Headsets must support the Bluetooth headset profile and printers must support the Bluetooth HCRP profile. In order to configure and use a Bluetooth headset, the Bluetooth module must have the latest Bluetooth firmware from the Bluetooth Firmware Updater application version 1.0.2 or later (http://www.info.apple.com/usen/bluetooth/).
For information about using Bluetooth 1.5 or about making your Macintosh Bluetooth-enabled, visit the Apple website at http://www.apple.com/bluetooth/.

Here's why bluetooth is so great:
I have an internal bluetooth module on my iBook G4. I also have a bluetooth phone,t he Sony Ericsson t610. For $20 a month T-Mobile, my provider, offers unlimited internet connectivity through my phone.
Everywhere I go, where I have cellphone service, a can be online with my iBook, and I get full dialup speeds consistently where I live.
I do not need a wireless hotspot. I AM MY OWN HOTSPOT. heheheheh
And of course, my phone only has to be within about 30 feet of my computer. I don't need to take it out of my pocket and plug it in. I don't need to put it in any kind of special mode. It just works.
That's why bluetooth is so great.

I can't get it to work with my Jabra BT200 headset.
When using "Set up new device", it says "Discovering...", then "Updating 1 device name", and then it goes back to "Discovering...".
When using "Pair new device", it reads the device name but returns an Authentication error.
I am using a Dlink bluetooth adapter.

I believe you will need to update the firmware in your Bluetooth adapter first before it will work. The D-Link USB adapter won't work with headsets or the Apple wireless keyboard/mouse without first applying the firmware update available from Apple. It only works with newer revisions of the D-Link adapter, so that will determine if you can use it or not.

Where are all the great Bluetooth devices?
I have a 17" PB and have been waiting a year for some decent BT devices. Currently, I own only the Apple BT keyboard (sorry Apple, need a scrollwheel and second button mouse). This is THE reason to have BT... Why own a laptop if you have a Joystick, mouse, keyboard, power, speakers, etc... connected to it? I HATE wires!
Of course, we are soon going to run into limitations of BT so it's only a temporary solution. Don't expect to run all of these devices at the same time... Why can't somebody design something that's more than functional? USB suffered the same thing and now there's USB 1.0, 1.1 and 2.0 and it's still not perfect. Firewire, at least, was designed well from the outset (same with SCSI). BT needs to be 10+Mb, the range is fine but speed and latency are shying people away.

These latest "rumors" are not rumors but news! I want juicy rumors about new iMacs be they cubic, spheric or pyramdic, 65nm G5@5,0GHz, G3s with Altivec consuming 0,5W @ 2,44GHz, iPVPs, iBoxes and 30" displays for $1500.
But, seriously, I want an eMac with 1,33GHz G4 processor and DOUBLE DATA RATE MEMORY at the same price as it is now!!

Actually, no. You can get some web browsing for FREE each month through T-Mobile. But you only have access to HTTP, SMTP, POP, and IMAP ports. I wanted the real thing, with no blocked ports, and a real IP address. That's worth the $20 a month plan to me -- seeing as all their competitors charge $80/month for the same thing.

I have the first old original Dlink one ... :(
However, I now got it to pair with the headset, but like another person mentioned, I cannot find anything useful to do with it ... I would have expected it to show up as a sound output and input source in the "Sound" prefpane - but it doesn't!

i was answering the question about what you could use a headset now with. i've been using a plugin headset recently but it's a hassle cause i have music speakers i need to connect also. i have way too many wires to contend with and the headset just gets confused with everything else.

My DLink wouldn't update. It's too old probably. However, my "Bluemate" USB adapter updated without problems - but it still doesn't change the behavior.

I have a pair of Advent wireless RF headphones, they're not bad, the sound quality certainly isn't as good nicer wired heaphones or my speakers, but they are great when I just want to listen to music while studying, or tv, when my roomate is in the room (college dorm).
Hopefully someday very soon we will have higher quality bluetooth headphones (not headsets, but full stereo headphones). I'll be the first to buy some.

Most notable is that "Speech recognition is not supported using a Bluetooth headset"
I don't know if the person that posted that it would work with speakable items and iChat was giving examples or saying they actually have used it. It seems to me like no software is implementing the update yet.

I have the T616, and for some reason I can't get it to function as a modem so that I can dial out...how'd you accomplish that? All I've seen was Ericson Infrared as a modem option and that is obviously not an option with a 15" AlBook....BTW, you forgot something major you can do with Bluetooth and a cell phone....Using Romeo or some similar applications you can pretty much control your entire computer from the phone....wonderful for iTunes and stuff....plus you can tie the menus to AppleScripts so you can pretty much do whatever you want...

Machine spec:
1.25GHz 15" Al-Powerbook, built-in Bluetooth. Apple wireless mouse, Panther 10.3.2.
After installing the update, I went looking for an SDK update to get access to the new features. DON'T INSTALL Bluetooth_SDK_1.4.1.dmg over this update (latest SDK update publically available from apple). No warnings are given. After the obligatory reboot, when the mouse is first detected, the following kernel panic happens every time:

I have a Jabra bluetooth headset, it works well on my PM (dual G4 Mirrored Doors) (as long as you go to Sound and choose Jabra for input and/or output). I can record with it, play back through it etc.
I also notice you can only have it paired to one device at a time, so when finished need to re pair it to my mobile phone
But as previous posts have said re their PB, Bluetooth set up assistant searches, it finds my PM, but not the headset, and then there is no "Headset" option for the Bluetooth?
Is this because PBs have internal microphone?
I downloaded 1.5 BT, restarted, in my PM set Sound preferences to choose Jabra headset, and worked like a charm. Great voice quality
Same thing with PB, but does not pair and can not see it?
Any suggestions, as would be really nice to use bluetooth headset with PB when out and about, even to just listen to stuff i am working on with a wired headset or everyone else listening in

More (phone related) uses for Bluetooth:
- Transfer your iCal schedules to your phone, so you get reminders 'on the road'.
- Send SMS messages using your Mac keyboard, so much easier than on a phone.
- Transfer pictures off a camera phone.
- Install background pictures and ring tones on your phone, without having to pay the crazy fees some people pay to download them!
- Backup your phonebook/address book and other files from your phone to your Mac, in case your phone is lost or damaged (happened to me recently!)

Are any US carriers offering this model yet (the Z600)? It looks really sweet, though I am a candy bar cellphone man myself. My girlfriend is way into Star Trek though, so of course her phone had to be clamshell, so it would be more tricorder-esque -- she SAID it was so it would be more protective of the screen, and she wouldn't have to lock the buttons, but I got her to admit to the tricorder-lust this morning.

Remember, that older headsets (hbh-15 and such) only support the headset protocol, so they should work. Headsets that ONLY support handsfree will NOT work. Headsets that support both handsfree and headset protocols will work.

The $20 a month, on top of your standard plan gives you GPRS internet bucket which is unlimited at 56K packet performance. (T-Mobile does not use more than one GSM channel for GPRS, unlike some providers who will provide up to 3 channels, which results in 160K). It also buys you 300 SMS messages in the GPRS bucket, which if you can switch your SMS bearer to GPRS, gives you more messages for text messaging. Unfortunately, my T610 does not allow that to happen (whereas my old T-68m did, though I hear a rumor of a firmware update. Half of the things in my T610 manual do not show up on my User interface)

I'd say the big reason is that it's currently more expensive to buy it directly than to have a phone company offer it under subsidized rates. looks like the one coming up on ebay will go for well over $300.

i see this as better than signing a 2 year contract. you do realize you have to change providers to get it at a discount, right? you can't just ask t-mobile for the phone @$100. they might knock some off, but they won't give you the "new service" deal.

Hey Nicky! What plan did you get from T-Mobile that gives you unlimited internet by linking your phone with your notebook via Bluetooth? One thing that confused me is when you are using your bluetooth phone to get online, do you need a regular dial-up ISP then use your regular cell phone air minutes to make a connection? or its something that you get a special data connection from your cell phone company that has nothing to do with your air minutes, your case, T-mobile? Thank you!

Ok, everyone who wants internet with t-mobile via bluetooth, follow these instructions.
You do NOT need to pay extra, unless you want email access ($4 extra) or any irregular port access/ ftp/ sftp... access ($20 extra)

It is great for synching pics from the phone too, plus video.

ok Nicky G is onto the right path and I'm glad someone here is knowledgeable on BT.
When Ericsson implemented BT FIRST, they also envisioned being able to use it FULLY.
Now imagine this........you're walking along your street and you're already on a conversation on your T-Mobile (example only) T616 and your coming within 100M of your CLASS 1 BT home phone modem connection (I'll explain further). Now you're on your daytime minutes and you're concerned of eating up your minutes but your either in a heated conversation/ business conversation that WILL NOT allow a disconnection......so within a minute that person (assuming they have call waiting) will have a beep on their other line. You advise them that its you on that other line and they should pick up on that line and disregard this current line the conversation is currently on, and Voila, your talking to them on your landline phone (modem) and now you don't have to use up your daytime minutes, which could get very expensive!!!!
Already their is a product that was announced (FINALLY) a few days ago, but I lost the location and the link, which is driving me NUTS to find it.
Jeff, Your talking outta your ass, and in 2 weeks I'll proove it as I'll be the technical support personnel teammember for T-Mobile.
GPRS across the entire WORLD is meant for more than 1 slot for downloads/uploads by default and cannot be changed!!!! Up to 8 slots is possible per channel, and even though your phone is capable for 4 slots simultaneously (sure about this or maybe its 3 I'll get back to you on this); 3download & 1 download, you CANNOT use all 8 slots at once, EVEN if you had a so called terminal that COULD do it (none currently exist).
You may have to check your GPRS settings to make sure your using the current APN, IP address, login & pw to use GPRS. If your usually seeing 9.6kbps then your on CID the orginal data communication for GSM (precursor to GPRS).
For the rest of us..........DOes the BT in current iMacs or even PowerMac G5s have a headset profile within their imbedded chip????
You could also upload pics taken from your T616/T68i (with communicam) to your iBook/PowerBook and to ur Weblog site!!
PS there are quite a few BT enabled flip phones....
Motorola V600, SonyEricsson Z600, Sharp GX-30 just to name a few.
I do hope that Apple works with SonyEricsson continually to allow VoIP calls via BT to allow internet to landline or service provider calls (can you say Cingular???) to mobile phones!!!!!
Good to own an Apple, painful without one and working towards one:D

Well...
I have built-in bluetooh in my Powerbook which makes it seamless and simple to use my:
Bluetooth wireless Apple Keyboard
Bluetooth wireless Logitech MX900 Mouse (which unfortunately doesn't support all the buttons...yet?)
Along with my 802.11g wireless connection, I can walk in from work, set my laptop on my desk open it up and VOILA, it just works
But wait, there's more.... :)
With my Sony-Ericsson T610 and T-Mobile's Kick @$$ data plan, I not only can sync my address book and calendar, but I can connect to the internet anywhere I get service all for the price of
$4.99 access which is supposed to only let me check the weather and movie times on the handset :) All with myphone in my pocket, Look mom, No Wires!
I also can't believe no one's mentioned
Salling Clicker (http://www.salling.com) which is one of those awesome pieces of software that really adds utility to your computer and is very Mac-like. I can now use my phone as a mouse, I can control iPhoto, iTunes, the DVD player, VLC, etc. etc. etc.
It's also kinda cool that you can control Keynote and Powerpoint with Salling Clicker. You can even display the notes you enter in Powerpoitn on teh Phone. Just make sure that your presentation is impressive enough to keep their mind off the fact that oyu're controlling your computer with your phone.
Now if only they can do something about that damned power cord, I'd be all set!!! By the way, why the F#@$@#4 is there not an external battery charger for powerbook batteries.

I can manually pair my M1000 to my iBook via a Mitsumi WIF-0402C USB adapter (it doesn't work via the setup assistant).
When I press the button on the headset, it connects, but that's it. The headset doesn't show up in the Sound input or output panes.

Ummm I already mentioned that...that's why I mentioned Romeo....it's free unlike Salling Clicker and it's about the same...and they are starting to make certain devices able to be powered by putting a thing on your battery which will allow it to charge when you sit it on a pad....I don't think it supports laptops, yet, but it does support the T61X phones as well as many others...it's not exactly an external charger but it could be as the battery would probably still charge without being in the laptop...

I have a Panasonic X70 - A very good clamshell / flip phone.
I did have a samsung T100 - good design not bad features but I wouldn't recommend , not great phones to use.
The Panasonic X70 isn't supported by isync yet but is a good full colour, polyphonic, Bluetooth, inbuilt, camera, voice recorder type phone. Not sure if it is available in USA yet - You guys should have access to all these phones , shouldn't you ????

Hello!
All this talk about handsfree jabra equipment and stuff reminded me of something I've always wanted to have.
You see, in my Rev.A. 12" PowerBook I have a modem (you all know that). But I never use it, because I have free broadband where I live.
My mac has a microphone as well! And it has speakers! Why not make a program that uses the modem as a phone? Let me use it to ring around with. I could call people from my adress book and such.
"Rrrriiing, riiingg.. Pick up the phone, [your name here], [your friends name] is calling".
Combine this with a Jabra bluetooth headset and let me walk around in my apartment.

What I want it the ability to use my iBook as a "headset" for my BT phone. That way I could keep the phone in my pocket while making phonecalls using the internal microphone and speakers of my computer.

BT phone= Bluetooth Cell Phone
My questions is, you can do this with either: a) speakerphone on your cell phone or b) a bluetooth headset. Don't expect Apple to make something so you can be cheap.
Address book will tell you who is calling if you click the bluetooth logo in it. You can then tell it to answer, send to voicemail, you can even send sms's with address book.

My family's second mac was a powermac 6500 with an apple 15" monitor w/speakers and a mic. it came with software that allowed you to do just that, plus it allowed for an answering machine with multiple mailboxes. I remember getting the phone function to work twice and then oddly never again. for some reason around the third call the microphone started getting some wierd feedback that made the phone function painful to use. The biggest problem was that the program launched way to slowly to be useable as a phone unless you left it on all the time (this was os 8 era, and memory/system resources were still at a premium, at least for my family.)
anyone else remember what this was called, and did anyone actually get it to work properly?

I do remember that app, Jason -- it was complimentary to the Global Village modems that came in those machines. I played with it a few times but never really put it into use (hey, I was must been in my early teens at the time -- ours was a 6300CD).

Seemed to work for playing audio back straight away... was about to test the microphone and the battery died. Suk.. It did "work" though when I was setting it up in preferences as you saw the vol. bar rise.
So maybe we need to learn which headset gives best battery life !!

That sounds like the appropriately named Phone Dialer application, which has been around since the early 90s, I believe. Interestingly (or not, I guess), it didn't actually allow you to hold a conversation over your computer. Its sole function was to access your modem, pick up a line, and dial whatever string of numbers you entered into the program.
*shrug* I don't really get it either, but I used it occassionally when doing phone-based tech support for a major computer manufacturer (*shudder*) several years ago to troubleshoot modem problems. It was good for verifying a valid TAPI setup in Windows, but that's about it.

Ok, so after reading a few forums, I found out that in order for the bluetooth setup assistant to add a "bluetooth headset" as an option, and so you can succesfully use a bluetooth headset, you have to download Apple's Bluetooth firmware version 1.02. Well, apparently this updates Apple's internal bluetooth module and D-Link's DBT-120 usb module. HOWEVER, this does not update the earlier version, D-Link's DWB-120M usb module. Therefore, people are saying those of us "early" adopters of the usb modules are out of luck using their bluetooth headsets with iChat and such. That is, unless you buy the new D-Link usb module. Man this sucks...

I downloaded the bluetooth 1.5 update and attempted to pair my JABRA BT200 whlst this was successful I could not use the head set. I then read the forums and realised that to achieve full functionality I needed to up date my blue tooth firmware.
I downloaded the latest firmware and installed it. Still no success.
After reading several forums I was still no closer to getting the headset to work. The closest I got was momentary connections achieved by pressing the power button on the headset, but the connection only laste for a split second.
Out of shear desperation I tried to reinstall the firmware, I was told it was successfully installed. I then Reinstalled the Blue tooth Update. I re-paired the headset and after pressing the power button on the head set several times I at last manage to keep a permanent connection between my Al G4 powerbook and my BT200 headset. i switched to the Sound preferance pain and I was able to select the JABRA as a sound in/output. I can listen to iTunes through it and use it to reecord.
I hope this is of some use to you.

I don't think that was it...or maybe there was an option to allow a voice call....I'm pretty sure we used it once to test it to call my grandmother....actually maybe we just used it as an auto dialer? I don't remember anymore...it probably allows it now though :)

I got mine to pair (iBook/G4 / apple internal BT module), but I wonder, to everyone else out there....once you paired the headset to your mac, did it still automatically connect to your phone when you turned it on? I found that mine did not, and the only way to fix this was to delete the pairings in the phone and the computer and do it again on the phone (only).
Is there a workaround to this? Do I just have to pair to the iBook first and the phone second?

Maybe this weekend I can play with it more. If that's the way it is, then my headset is not going to be doing much talking to my iBook at all...I bought it for the phone, ya know?
Someone mentioned a headset or handsfree profile for the computer, to use its speakers and mic...now that would be cool. Wonder how hard it would be to write? :D

FYI Not all BT Headsets are capable of being connected nor be paired to 8 devices....some only allow one connetion/pairing.
Unfortunately guessing at which one's won't help but the manual will.
If your using a USB BT connection like the D-Links that Apple first began selling then sorry your SOL. Those orginal BT USB connections DIDN't allow a or even have the protocol stack for headset/handsfree connection with headsets. If yours does you need to find out which of the protocols it supports Headset or Handsfree, then find out which one, preferrably both, of those your headset supports.
Hope that helps some to those having a lil trouble.

I could've sworn that when I bought my BT200, it said it paired to ~6 devices, but I can't see it in the manual now. Maybe I'm thinking of the Sony-Ericsson one.
But anyway, do you know, do the protocol stacks for different Bluetooth profiles reside in firmware on the BT card? This seems kinda insane to me. They must be at least flash-updatable. Perhaps there is some more complicated reason about the Bluetooth 1.0 standard and HW changes that were necessary as a result that prevent the older devices from adopting these profiles?
(Here's to hoping that the BT internal module on the iBook stays upgradeable into the reasonable future :))

Your onto the right track of thinking. If the BT chip has hardware support for profiles then its up to the manufacturer to supply the drivers for it or maybe a hack. Much like the serial port hack made for the MDA II PPC smartphone. SOme Belkin units (USB devices) are the same way in behaviour.
In part yes your right that protocol stacks for different Bluetooth profiles reside in firmware on the BT card. but nothing will happen/nor will it exist in firmware if hardware doesn't support it.
Its a little confusing when a device says it supports handsfree profile, and some BT headsets will work (because they support the same profile) and yet other headsets won't (because they only support the headset profile). Confusing that the names are different for their obvious reasons yet for some headsets to support them when the "general" ideology of handsfree when it comes to cellphones is to put down the phone and speak loudly into a room where the phone picks up your voice not a headset.
Try doing a search for Apple or the company name of the BT device thats imbedded in your iBook to see what profiles is support via hardware, then goto their site to see if a firmware upgrade is available and supported by Apple.
hope that helps a little.
